A lot of homeless people can’t work. But, for those who can, it’s hard to find a job when you haven’t been able to shower for a week, have no money to purchase nice clothing for interviews (let alone no where to keep these nice clothes), and don’t have an address which is often needed to secure either a job or benefits.
I have been homeless this year, and was lucky enough to get into a housing program. But my finances are still fucked, and I can’t work because of serious mental and physical disabilities. It’s a trap that is so difficult to get out of, and I’m very worried that I’ll be homeless again in a few years.
Imagine the toll this takes on a person, then add that this population is hated, derided, and repeatedly victimized by both the general population and the government/police. Imagine struggling with mental issues, and having all that you’ve managed to collect stolen from you every other week. Imagine having physical disabilities and being unable to run away from assaults. Imagine all of the above with the additional burdens of being a woman, a POC, and/or LGBTQ+.
Now think about how rough the job market is for people who have stable housing, and who meet the qualifications of a job, and for those who wouldn’t be a “DEI” hire in the age of “anti-woke”.
Empathy isn’t a weakness, it literally only means that you understand someone else’s plot in life. Being able to understand situations like or unlike your own is a strength, and it’s necessary to promote societal change. And that is exactly why conservatives hate it
