Coffee. Cliché, I know, and I’m not even talking about the watching-James-Hoffman-videos-before-prepping-my-4000-dollar-espresso-machine type of habit. Just the few minutes of preparing a cup the way I like it, and finding a quiet couple of minutes to drink it.

4·11 days agoTech company stock prices are buoyed by future growth prospects. If your competitors are all building shittons of compute capacity and you are not, that’s like signaling that you don’t plan to grow (at least in the current insane climate)

2·12 days agoI think about this a lot, and have been vacillating between AI-driven cultural and technical stagnation due to it being so much easier to generate derivative slop rather than make something new from-scratch, and an age of cultural/technical acceleration because so many people have interesting but latent thoughts and now there are great tools to help get them out into the world much more easily.

2·14 days agoHah I just opened it this morning for the first time in ages to work on a little OSS project and was amazed by how easy it was to switch between figma (which I use for work) and penpot. Never even occurred to me that it might not work well in Firefox.

9·2 months agoFor copyleft licenses like the GPL maybe this would be true if the original, attributed code, along with all of the new alterations, modifications, enhancements and improvements, were also fed back into the machine, but even then it seems unlikely. Copyleft is explicitly about keeping derivative works in the public sphere, not really about ownership of ideas per se.

Climate@slrpnk.net•In 2025, India's carbon dioxide output edged down, breaking a decades-long trend of steady increases. This is also the first time on record that emissions have fallen during normal economic conditionsEnglish5·2 months agoRight I was mainly thinking of urban air quality. You don’t really appreciate how huge of a difference catalytic converters and 4-cycle engines make until you go to a place where they aren’t as widespread (and obviously electric goes way beyond that)

Technology@lemmy.zip•US may force operating systems to have mandatory age verification, share info with third partiesEnglish
15·2 months agoIf they’re serious about it it will eventually be made into a requirement for serious services. I could imagine federal regulations requiring online banking, accessing government services (including school-related services), and maybe even ecommerce and payment processing looking for this trusted info, and refusing to run otherwise. Like TPM on steroids.

This is a pretty interesting project! Assuming one wanted to run everything locally, what’s the minimum viable hardware stack for near-realtime performance?
