World News@lemmy.world•Woman fined £150 for pouring coffee down drainEnglish
66·1 year agoThis story is really poor and badly reported, as it doesn’t explain WHY the Environmental Protection Act 1990 has these fines in place and why what this women did was wrong. Instead it’s a clickbait story that implies the woman is a victim.
That has already been explained in the article. 👀
Section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 makes it an offence to deposit or dispose of waste in a way likely to pollute land or water, including pouring liquids into street drains.

4·1 year agoIt isn’t the free-meals-programme that’s the problem, it’s the implimentation of it that’s the problem.
It’s already a problem since begining, costing up to 1 trillion rupiah or 60 million US dollars per day. And the money flows to high-ranking officers and officials through foundations that have kitchens that cook free meals.

2·1 year agoWell, Northern India is located within the ITCZ, which increases the risk factor for heavy rainfall.
The ITCZ is a belt of low pressure near the equator where trade winds from the Northern and Southern hemispheres converge. Its movement northwards towards India during summer brings moist winds and triggers the monsoon. The position and intensity of the ITCZ significantly influence the amount and distribution of rainfall across the country.

1·1 year agoA few days ago, while on public transportation. I heard the driver and the passenger next to him complaining about the drainage work being done during the rainy season.
The funny thing is that they don’t realize that even though it rained heavily yesterday, the peak of the rainy season should occur around January to March. Without climate change, it should still be the dry season.
This makes me think that so many people are unaware of climate change.

1·1 year agoWell this could help the Sahel countries, as they do not have the funds to continue the project. Of course, we do not know for sure whether the Sahara Desert or the Arabian Desert will become greener in the long term.

With increasing anthropomorphization of “climate”, few know that just 5,000 years ago, the massive desert extending from North Africa, through the Middle East and across Asia to the Gobi Desert in China was lush and a highly hydrated landscape. Even fewer know that the average temperature of the Earth in this era was significantly warmer than today.

I was just curious to find out about this after watching the NHK program “Silk Road” and it turns out there is also a Great Green Wall project in China.
and in Figure 2, the Gobi Desert is located within the ITCZ.

1·1 year agoI was not familiar with the technical term, but have heard the term ‘doldrums’. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intertropical_Convergence_Zone
Just like me, the first time I heard about the ITCZ was when the Sahara Desert was flooded last year. And that was because of the ITCZ shift.

Climate Crisis, Biosphere & Societal Collapse@sopuli.xyz•For the First Time in 40 Years, Panama’s Ocean Lifeline Has VanishedEnglish
1·1 year agoThe article refers to a journal within the article, but this is not mentioned in the article.
However, we need further research.
Data suggest that the cause was a reduction in Panama wind-jet frequency, duration, and strength, possibly related to the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) position during the 2024–2025 La Niña, though the mechanisms remain unclear. Nevertheless, the consequences are likely significant, including decreases in fisheries productivity and exacerbated thermal stress on corals that typically benefit from upwelling’s cooling.

Climate Crisis, Biosphere & Societal Collapse@sopuli.xyz•For the First Time in 40 Years, Panama’s Ocean Lifeline Has VanishedEnglish
0·1 year agoIt is likely due to climate change reducing the strength of the trade winds. This is indicative of much larger, global impacts from weakened trade winds.
Well, Panama is located within the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), and wind speeds within the ITCZ are relatively weak.

as a coder myself, I admit that sometimes coders are the dumbest people in the world because they live in their own bubble. they only see LLM as mere tools that would greatly help with development.
do they know how many resources are wasted by data centers? do they care when the people suffer from data center pollution? or do they realised LLM trained by stealing people works? etc
