It looks like they used Monkey Jesus as their reference picture…
They’re the same picture 🤣
How does this keep happening?
Apparently it’s a Spanish thing. From the article someone posted below (https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/amateur-restorer-botches-carving-spain-180976271/)
Spanish law currently allows amateurs to repair historic artworks—a fact that has led many conservation experts to argue for tighter regulations in the industry.
Are the owners of the art just contracting the cheapest possible option?
Not even cheapest, they recruit friends and family.
It’d be extremely hilarious if we didn’t irrevocably destroy a piece of history every time it happens.
AI design!
AI definitely would have done better. This looks like a child drew a smiley face on a lump of clay by poking their fingers in it.
Would be funny if the same lady was behind this.
“How does this keep happening?”
“She’s the minister’s niece…”
She didn’t do the Ronaldo one, someone else did. It would be hilarious if she had done all 3, but I find it equally hilarious that they’ve allowed 3 different people to crap the bed this badly…
Edit: I guess technically the Ronaldo sculpture started out ugly & the correction worked, so maybe it’s not in the same category?
Honestly they should just own it. Have an entire wall of beatific potato head people.
You sure it’s not a onion article?
My dear lord, how did they even get hired?
Oh my god that’s so bad how is it this bad
This can’t be real, at no point could any sane person look at that and think, whelp, my job here is done.
But someone might look at that and say “oh shit I’m so bad at my job. I’d better not touch it anymore or I’ll make it even worse”
As if the end result wasn’t already obviously bad enough, somehow seeing the original manages to make it worse…

“Everyone thinks they’re not qualified to restore art, just fake it til you make it!”
At this point, it’s our last resort against AI images
Mr. Bill! Ooh nooooo!
Well that was restored by Dr. Bean (apparantly)
Just another example of derivative imitations saturating the art market.
Work quality adjusted to pay and inflation, isn’t this what the market economy is all about ?
It’s fine. After a few days the swelling will go down, and you won’t even know it’s a potato.
Not sure if this is true or not, but I remember reading somewhere that some artists intentionally botch historical art restorations for publicity and to drive more visitors to see it in person
