There are a lot of seizure laws that cops have. They don’t use any of them unless the demographic in charge of the vehicle in question is one they want to target

Group of three young teenagers all wearing hoodies pulled over their faces nearly hit a group of schoolkids out on excursion while I was in the park this morning.

All three were on the same electric bike. And I’ll add for the Americans in the audience that riding powered vehicles through parks is generally illegal and certainly illegal in this park. None wearing helmets and three to a bike are also both illegal.

    Cant get crushed soon enough.

I hate to see e-moto bikes take the heat, kind of similar (less nuanced) to guns in the US. The tech is cool as hell, and honestly I want 3! And it’s a damn shame they’re being used inappropriately, something should absolutely be done about it. But I get an uncomfortable feeling with proactive laws. I understand that there can’t be any e-moto crashes if there are no bikes, but people could do the same anti social behaviors on a dirt bike. It’s a matter of accessibility in my opinion, they’re relatively inexpensive and idk about license laws but obviously nobody follows them. Why not just treat them like motorcycles and charge delinquents similarly?

      nearly

Meanwhile an infant was crushed by a car in Sydney and no one calls for the destruction of cars.

Cool, would make an entertaining tv show if it was a mobile crusher… get the kids and the parents, record their crying and excuses, make them watch the crush… sorta like the Highway Patrol shows

The definition of illegal according to the article:

Police powers will specifically target “throttle-only, high-powered e-motorbikes” which they say are “fuelling anti-social, behaviour, community frustration and serious injuries.”

The key difference police are seeking to enforce is the difference between e-bikes, a pedal-assisted bike and “illegal electric motorbikes” which have different power outputs.

Police will soon have the power to test these bikes on the spot with new “dyno units” which can “determine whether the e-bike’s power assistance cuts out completely at 25km/h as per the current law in NSW” they said in a statement.

You can peddle far faster than that. What a shit speed limit

How much are these “dyno units” costing tax payers

I guess if you want to ride an electric motorbike, you will need to register it and get a motorcycle license; and follow road rules relating to motorcycles. The bar is higher because the dangers are higher.

Yes but unassisted the mass is significantly reduced and an effort required to maintain speed. The main problem is the motobilke tier ones that dickheads, mainly kids, are using. Dyno units probably cost much less, especially long term, than healthcare cost associated with these things. Not just from them striking people but kids that lack the brainpower and experience to operate vehicles on the road, or in general.

You know what, I’m sold. If we can’t let them give themselves or other people traumatic brain injuries, then we should hand them back to corporate social media that has been shown to be damaging to them psychologically, packed with misinformation and controlled by billionaires. There is nothing outside for children to do if not travelling the speed of motor vehicles on sidewalks or weaving through traffic, after all. It’s a bold take and I’m here for it.

You can pedal faster, but you cant speedup as fast as e-bikes or e-scooters. Only illegal bikes are to be destroyed.
