I think a civil war on their border that risks spilling over into their territory and threatened their economic relationship with neighbouring EU gives them plenty of reasons to intervene. Especially since they had been actively trying to end the conflict by negotiation with Ukraine for near on a decade, but whose negotiated treaties (the 3 Minsk agreements) kept being violated by Ukrainian fascist paramilitaries.
That isn’t imperialism. It’s the actions of a rational actor and was entirely predictable, especially because Russia consistently stated their intentions throughout.
The idea is simple; no one should have invaded Ukraine.
