Something strange is going on, deep below the ground beneath our feet.

“The magnetic field is vital to our continued existence. It helps keep the atmosphere we breathe in”

I knew about reducing how much cosmic radiation we receive, but not about protecting the atmosphere:

“Many scientists have argued that the magnetic field is crucial for protecting the atmosphere from erosion by energetic particles coming from the Sun.” https://science.nasa.gov/earth/earth-oxygen-magnetic-field-linked/

Also, “the planetary magnetic field has followed similar rising and falling patterns as oxygen in the atmosphere for nearly a half billion years, dating back to the Cambrian explosion, when complex life on Earth emerged.”

Reverse or flip? Cause the magnetic poles flip pretty regularly on a geological time scale.

Yup, leading to a time of basically no magnetic field, and thus increased radiation. This does not appear to be that, more that satellite magnetic observation lets us see into the dynamics of mantle movement. They said 5% was moving the opposite way to normal (east instead of west, so reverse, not flip), which is a pretty big chunk of mass.

Considering that username and the canon use of Mandarin slang throughout the perfect series, that misspelling really jumped out at me. 😅

Nah, me doing an editing pass and not catching it is stupid. How quickly the skills atrophy. Not beating myself up over it, just acknowledging.

There’s a movie called The Core and while it is kinda ridiculous it does have an interesting idea.
