    yeah the real issue is the nature of federation. if an instance allows content from another instance it ends up in its instance. This is why I wish the whole concept had concentrated more on a shared login type thing like saml combined with some sort of api calls to group search so that when a user goes to content it would be on the server serving it. This would make it where there is no legal obligation for an instance to not be part of something and then everything could be left up to the user. I think anyway. Im more a theory guy. I would still like the default blocklist for good user experience but the instance should theoretically not have any concerns if a user does not opt in or out (im fine with opt out as long as its made clear to the user it exists and makes it easy to reverse.)
