    That varies greatly by location. And most mortgage companies don’t require a 20% down payment anymore. You put up like 1-3% then they tack on mortgage insurance until you’ve paid off enough principal to equal 20% (or the market value increases to cover the 20% which happened with mine). For my initially $115k house, it was $50 a month.

    It does end up more expensive in the long run, but it makes getting a home more obtainable

    There are also USDA loans for homes outside of city limits that require no down payment.
