A green wave or platoon effect occurs when a series of traffic lights (usually three or more) are coordinated to allow continuous traffic flow over several intersections in one main direction.

Oh look, an article that my city’s traffic engineers refuse to read. They insist that adding more lanes to every road will fix congestion. 5 minutes of my 10 minute commute is spent at 3 abysmally timed lights in a half mile stretch.
