Thanks for sharing. Recent news made it sound like Nitter is finito, but apparently they were talking about the domain, not the software.

The project itself is also on hold so it might stop working at some point but for now I’ll take what I can.

Your nick is “antisocialmedia”, yet you post a frontend for the Nazi-socialmedia? Isn’t that called irony? 😁

I live in a country where government institutions publish things exclusively on corporate social media so those anonymous frontends are a godsend. I also get links to those platforms from people I know and I’m not hardcore enough to cut contact with my friends and family over this like some people on Fediverse tell me to.

Sure. That’s your choice. I just don’t use those. Especially not that kid’s personal playground. And noone is important enough for me to throw away principles for a silly tiny post.

It’s very useful to be able to look at links others shared. You just replace the domain part. I want to know what the enemy is doing.

If there’s any irony it’s that the fediverse is social media, too.

I get the technical reason, of course. It’s just that a hit is a hit. Even if you exclude yourself as the product, you still help to let the platform stay alive. No clicks, no platform

And yeah sure, fediverse is social media too. But, at least, it’s still “real” and free. We’re no shitty product.

I didn’t review Nitter source code but I assume Nitter caches Twitter posts because it helps stay low profile. If they don’t, that’s still a cost for Twitter because they don’t get to profile users or display ads, just waste bandwidth. They can brag about user counts but who would trust user counts from a bot infested platform?

It’s the same reason I buy Kindles. They’re heavily subsidised on the assumption that the end user will buy books from Amazon. If you buy a Kindle while discounted and never buy books from them you likely cost them money.

OK, the does-produce-cost-that-earns-nothing-in-return-argument is solid. Didn’t think of that.

They can brag about user counts but who would trust user counts from a bot infested platform?

At this point, it seems the other half of those platforms, that is still human, do. Or else they’d be gone. Or they’re just oblivious or ignorant of the fact
