You can tell this is a leftist meme because it’s got half a novel’s worth of text on it.

Most millennial I’ve met have been professionals who are not in stem, but i understand the top panel to be true of Zoomers. Doesn’t mean anyone followed through on it though, when choosing college degree 🥲

That said - why should they? Degree seems to have not much influence on what people do as a career in my country.

It’s like, I just woke up and am reminded that everything I’ve worked towards for half my life, the last 40 years, is meaningless and the struggle and anxiety will continue with no end for another 40 years.

AI robots will do most tasks well before another 40 years.

But will that improve or worsen our lives? Probably worsen, since every year keeps getting worse.

Look at the bright side, if you’ve ever played Fallout games, at least you have some training on how to deal with what comes next.

30 is about when I finished my degree, and I thought “look at me, got a late start, but I’m really doing it, it should get easier from here”…

Strange, lived in capitalist societies all my life, yet none of these seem familiar (except climate change).

Let’s see who’s really behind that mask!

    spoiler

    shitty US policies

Betcha you live in a neoliberal state.

Your own countries shitty policies are catching up to you.

And the very same billionaires driving the current US state of affairs have plenty of money left over to capture your political class as well.

And they will, unless your society gets active now about it, and doesn’t wait until AfD takes over, or whatever.

An economic system characterized by the private ownership of the means of production, and state regulation to protect the right of private ownership.

There are a lot of different kinds of production, so that older definition isn’t really that relevant in the globalized world.

There isn’t really any single definition of capitalism, I dont think even Marx defined it in a single sentence himself. But I personally think an important aspect of modern capitalism is capital owning far more than just the means of production, going to the point where capital determines social and political power. An economy where capital has dictatorial control over people’s lives and even over entire governments.

By my definition, a private share company is capitalist, while a family business or a coop is not capitalist, even though they are all private businesses with economic protection from the government. The question is whether political power comes from your money, or from who you are as a person, and democracy.

Its also important to note that an economy can be dominated by capitalist activity, but can still have government protections keeping capitalist activity out of certain sectors, such as public healthcare or welfare.

There are lots of economies where they have free markets and capitalist enterprises, and even ultra-concentration of wealth, but dictatorial capital does not control every aspect of citizens’ lives.

Glad I went to university in Australia where “really expensive” isn’t a problem for domestic students.

For citizens, the government subsidizes it and pays 50-80% of the cost depending on the course (higher priority areas have better coverage). The remaining cost can be covered by an interest-free loan through the government (called HECS-HELP), and you only have to start paying off the loan once you earn more than AU$70k/year, which removes a lot of the stress. The repayments are automatically withheld by your employer as tax, the same way they withhold income tax.

(even though there’s no interest, the loan is indexed for inflation once per year)

In the US the government pays up to 100% but then you have to pay the government back. Lose lose I guess. I pay the government in taxes, then I barrow money that has to be paid back with interest. Fucking for profit government, WTF

In Germany you don’t need a loan. Housing could be expensive if you study far from home but otherwise it’s very cheap.

Yeah it’s definitely not as good as countries where university/college is fully covered by the government, but it’s also better than plenty of other countries too.

A lot of people in Australia just keep living with their parents while they go to university.

These problems in this comic strip were not caused by capitalism, they were caused by finance.

Since the 70s, the boomer generation borrowed and borrowed and borrowed from their children’s future and sacrificed their unborn children and grandchildren to live their cheap low labour lifestyles. The pumped the markets with cheaper and cheaper fake dollars to fund wars, juice markets and build their dreams.

Now the bill is coming due and you are going to pay one way or another.

Blame Keynesianism, blame Nixon, blame Reagan and blame the selfish me-first generation for not thinking past the backs of their refrigerators or past the ends of their filthy tailpipes.

Actually, the financial class captured the political class to unlock more and more financialization methods. Meanwhile, business interests captured the courts to open the political class to more and more bribes.

What happened here in the states can happen anywhere. And if your own nation is being run with neoliberal policies, it’s going to happen there too.
