They needed 14 motor changes, but only 4 batteries.

That’s pretty poor reliability, particularly when EVs are always touted as less likely to require maintenance than ICE vehicles.

The last motor lasting over a million km with just a seal leak is a good show, that’s more what I’d expect from a properly reliable motor (I’ve seen a few of the old 1HZs around the million km mark without a rebuild for example). Pity it required a rebuild to remove an inherent design flaw to be able to reach that.

That does mean the fourteen previous motors only lasted an average of ~130k km however and that is a truly rubbish level of reliability…

This is a 2013 Tesla Model S P85+, one of the oldest EV’s around, pretty much 99% of EV’s these days on the second hand market are > 2017

Also iirc Tesla was happy to give him replacement engines as they were learning a lot from his use

To cover that daily distance at an average speed of 100 km/h would take nearly nine hours behind the wheel, before adding charging breaks or other stops.

          That’s insane

It is mostly bad Chinese shit, everything dies after 5 years. Second hand market looks gloom now, and I have little hope that it will be better in the future.

I’m 60, you sound like my grandfather when my dad told him he was going to get a Toyota and not a landrover way back when i was a kid, “why are. you buying that cheap japanese shit!”. I can kind of understand that though, he was in New Guinea in WW2.

but then my dad did the same thing to my sister when she bought a Hyundai, “why are you buying that cheap korean shit?”

I have an 18mth old BYD, 3.5 yrs to go I guess, then it dies.

Japan has a culture of striving for perfection. Cars are just an application of that principle. China, on the other hand, does not have that same drive, and I don’t see any economic incentive to move in that direction. Enshittification is the current trend.

That wasn’t true of Japan in mechanical engineering until after WW2, then it really pushed hard to become the best from the 50s onwards.

I don’t know why you’d think China can’t do the same thing. They spent most of late last century making cheap crap to the west, and then pivoted to making most of our tech goods. Making a phone is a lot harder than making a car, but they do that just fine and the quality is high.

    That’s not a good thing

we need fewer cars, we need to build fewer cars

    and make more public transport

Donald Trump is the most influential environmentalist in the world. Greta Thunberg never convinced this level of EV adoption.
