See, the thing is if you take a kids phone away you need to do something else with them to replace that time and habit.

Sure, because depression and trauma clearly must be due to the smartphone. It’s not like the smartphone might be the escape route and you’re now locking the child in to whatever caused the trauma (most likely either school, domestic violence or loss / isolation).

Not saying it can’t possibly be cyber-bullying or the s̶o̶c̶i̶a̶l̶ ̶a̶l̶g̶o̶r̶i̶t̶h̶m̶ manipulation engine, but just blindly taking away the things your child is escaping into the most is a shortcut to either an estranged or dead one.

So the if the Phone is an escape and escapes are a-okay, when are we arguing in favor of drugs for children?

Shouldnt it be both: limiting or prohibiting escapes for children and therapy?

Otherwise you are adding a damaging coping mechanism to untreated trauma.

        Edit

The Argument that the Smartphone causing Depression is wrong. Sometimes. But most things on the Smartphone are essentially malevolent in some way.

Wow, equating a child’s coping mechanism and trauma escapes with giving them drugs is a low that’s genuinely impressive. And infuriating.

I never said anything against therapy, that’s of course essential. So is making sure there is no immediately harmful stuff around them (which entertainment, games and social interactions via internet that are used to cope are NOT fucking part of). But taking away their coping mechanism is literally the worst thing you can do and will only inflict even more damage.

I went through this fucking shit two decades ago (but with 2000’s computer & internet) and I’ll die on this hill. Implying that a phone is inherently damaging is regurgitated boomer bullshit, and taking it away if it’s their coping mechanism / outlet completely from a traumatized child will lead to either estrangement later or suicide earlier.

Why? Because to me that is very equatable.

Drugs are an escape from trauma just as well. Social Media is just as addicitve.

Why is it in any way wrong? (You did not call it that way but that seems to be the Message)

which entertainment, games and social interactions via internet that are used to cope are NOT fucking part of

Only If you ignore the science, especially for social media.

And of course you know there are games that and movies and serieses that shouldnt be consumed by kids. I hope we can agreed that kids shouldnt watch Breaking Bad and play something like Postal.

Implying that a phone is inherently damaging

            I never said inherently.

Probably as likely as suicide when they still have it.

How come suicide rates did not drop since the advent of the phone?

You seem to imply that the phone is spmehow aiding psychological Regeneration (probably with all the Fake News, the constant barrage of negativity, sexialized Advertisement etc. I bet that is curing)

But somehow the rates are as High as the 1930s

So the “escape” and “coping mechanism” does not work as such. The mid 30s need to accept that.

Damn bro, you’re dense. Like, really.

Social Media is just as addicitve. Only If you ignore the science, especially for social media.

You’re really all in on ignoring literally everything else you can do with your Smartphone, huh? Just fyi, a lot of young people only have a smartphone and do everything with that. Internet in general, contact to friends, watch media etc. Your link is, again, a study about social media. There’s more to a Smartphone than that, believe it or not.

              I never said inherently.

You literally equated it to drugs.

How come suicide rates did not drop since the advent of the phone?

So the “escape” and “coping mechanism” does not work as such. The mid 30s need to accept that. Nope, never said that. Coping is not curing, it’s a survival strategy.

Nope, never said that. You obviously do not even know what coping even is (The mid 30s are apparently smarter than you about this). Here, read a Wikipedia. It’s not about curing, never was. It’s a emotional management and mental survival strategy, and there are good and bad ones. The only thing you managed to do is show to a strawman that social media can be pretty bad (duh), and somehow equate that to taking the whole phone away. The phone that also is source of entertainment, social contacts, distraction (yes, also healthy coping) from whatever hurts them. And you want to take all of that away. That’s exactly the kind of boomershit I meant, and you’ve made yourself a perfect negative example.

              Anyway, enough of this nonsense.

I mean, if I had kids they sure as hell wouldnt have any google or apple device and no access to anything Meta. A 15 year old laptop with Linux (commodore OS would be pretty sick as a kid, I’d have LOVED it) with either none or very limited internet access. No Tok, no fb, no insta.

Or, some books. Do kids read anymore?

I know, I’d be the greatest parent of all time, but thats not gonna happen 🙃

Note on the book : You have to let THEM chose what to read based on the genre and plot.

Otherwise it’s equivalent to someone else making you watch stereotypical tiktok stuff.

      Personal tastes differ.

Sounds reasonable except that kids will notice the technology around them and start questioning you and using the technology in your back; so you have to teach them with lower doses…
