I do agree that it’s annoying that they reuse names but Earendil/Pi are completely different from e.g. Palantir. IMHO Pi is all about making LLMs accessible to everyone and is a lot more suited to locally hosted models due to its minimalism.
In my mind, a lot of the criticism of AI is really about the closed source models a la OpenAI/Anthropic. There are small models that are trained on (relatively) small amounts of compute, without copyrighted material and which cost next to nothing to run on a moderately powerful gaming PC. Making those models more useful is a win in my book.
