Caption:
Every hour on the hour, a huge truck, made entirely of pressed ham, lumbers its way across dog heaven—and all the car chasers can decide for themselves whether or not to participate.

I wish to volunteer for ham truck duties.
hang on this isn’t heathcliff
I think Gary Larson second-guessed himself here, because the caption is unecessary.
The caption is overwritten, for sure.
Every hour, in dog heaven, the ham truck rolls by.
It even leaves it to the reader to connect for themselves that it’s called the “ham truck” because it’s made of ham.
To be fair, we are living in the world Larson created… so maybe the casual reader glancing over from Lil Abner needed more guidance in the day.
Good insight and I don’t disagree, but I actually meant overwritten as compared to many other Far Sides.
Yes, I agree, it is overwritten and your summary is an improvement, even for fans of the Lockhorns.
My guess is that he thought it would be hard to tell that it was made out of ham. Still works if you don’t catch that though. Dog heaven = truck chasing works as a joke on its own.
Yes, the ham is the only thing I wouldn’t have guessed; I guessed bread… but it’s fine, the edibility is not amibiguous even if the flavor is.
And if it is heaven, every bite can be different to suit every dog. In my dog’s heaven, the truck is made of a mixture of puréed chicken hearts and chicken-stock cooked oatmeal. But, honestly, I think he’d just be so thrilled to bite a truck.
