While Nazis don’t own the swastika, they are so closely associated that you’re going to make folks upset by flying it and you’re going to make Nazis feel like they are welcome, and the unspoken intent unfortunately doesn’t matter because when it comes to fascists you can’t afford to give the benefit of doubt, nor can you afford to embolden them by making them feel welcome.
That’s not right or fair, but it’s the way things are. Just like there might indeed be some folks for whom the Confederate flag is associated with their family heritage, but 99% it just identifies racist assholes and attracts the same and makes them feel safe in opening their mouths.
I grew up a huge fan of Dukes of Hazzard and the General Lee, but now I see nothing but hatred when I see that flag. And if I saw a skinhead with a swastika, I’d get the fuck out of Dodge ASAP.
