Beyond that… I mostly use it as an RSS reader for comics and memes, and an occasional conversation with humans.

I hear that was a good one, but never tried it. Maybe I am confusing it with another one (like Connect and/or Sync, though I historically have not cared about 3rd-party apps) but I thought it wasn’t being updated for a long time - yet its last update was just last month so not a worry now (if it ever was)!

Unlike polished social media that has an incentive to sell ads to more people hence cares that you can scroll forever without wanting to stop, this place leaves it up to you to shape your own experience.

Block people, communities, and even whole entire instances that you don’t want to see (the latter is significantly easier using PieFed than Lemmy, plus it adds e.g. keyword filters, anti-AI measures, ability to filter also based on post flairs, etc.).

Lemmy.World and my home instance Discuss.Online both federate with fed.brid.gy, but I’ve never once seen any content from there and from everything that I read it seems that federation is more or less irrelevant here - necessary but nowhere close to sufficient to make the interconnection happen.

That icon is much more noticeable using the web browser UI, appearing next to every post and every comment (clicking it goes to the home instance where the content came from), though 3rd-party apps substitute that with their own provided experience.

Like iirc Voyager has it upon the app startup but it’s grey not colored like this, and I don’t typically start Voyager from scratch but rather just pop it back up for as long as possible, so that startup screen is rarely visited.

Though the discovery that this anti-feature was even implemented in the first place is a much higher concern. This “feature” itself is one thing, but the lack of transparency surrounding it is a whole other matter on top.

Ah, thank you for sharing your experience there. So it’s possible but difficult, like Mastodon (where behavior is also inconsistent) - good to know! I should probably stop listing nodeBB as a major player in the Threadiverse then.

Technically I still do, but it’s all so terribly complicated that it scares people away - Lemmy vs. PieFed vs. Mbin, and then what experience someone would get from each individual instance, like how are things on PieFed.zip vs. PieFed.social vs. quokk.au.

All of which allow exposure to tankies on Lemmy.ml, thus requiring effort on behalf of the new users to first discover the controversy and decide what to do about it, and then figure out ways to implement their decision (which as with pretty much everything else is far easier on PieFed than Lemmy).

We have a reputation problem, and PieFed does little to solve that. I once placed strong hopes that the “instance chooser” in particular would help, but that hope has not turned into reality.

Android has Do Not Disturb, which since 99% of all phone calls are spam these days, has to be left on permanently. You can either block or allow all SMS texts. You can also set custom notification tones for each group chat… but making those change depending upon driving is a whole other matter.

The person I responded to mentioned Samsung, which I think has something that might work along those lines. Though that’s an entirely separate registration, with email address (and obviously your phone number), and an entirely separate corporate app store, over and above all that already with Google.

iOS forces you to sell your soul to them in order to enter their walled garden, but once you do they take great care of you, in most ways, even if as they choose rather than as you would wish.
