The only times I do so are when they only run in-house adds. RoyalRoad is an example, they run advertisements for creators that use their platform, and its useful to find content you might enjoy.
Other than that though? Nothing. I have so many layers of add filtering that basically nothing gets through.
To be fair, the budget isn’t so much a question of “how much I have”, but rather a question of “how long am I willing to save up”
The 3K figure I used in my post was based on the relative price of similar systems I’d found online that “mostly” for the bill of what I was looking for.
Systems that actually had the kind of CPU I was looking for often ran in the range of 7K, which would take me about two to three years to save up for.
And while yes, I was looking in the wrong catagory, as far as I can tell they don’t sell non-NAS systems. I wasn’t able the find a single example of a server designed for CPU tasks until I posted here and was recommended the Minisforum MS-01. Which is, admittedly, overkill in the extreme, but at least I won’t have to upgrade for a long while, and I only have to save up for 3 or 4 months to afford it!
Yeah, the Minisforum Ms-01 was suggested a lot, and as far as I can tell, its nearly perfect. After reading thtough the comments on this post, I’m planning on buying one or two on a few months.
I’m a bit concerned about the risks associated with having storage and compute on the same device, but I can always get a regular nas for storage later.
Thank you so much! After searching it up online, the Minisforum MS-01 seems to check off every box I’d had when I went looking.
I’ll look around to see if there is anything more suited, but for now, it seems like what I’ll end up going with.
Thanks!
Thank you, I’ll do just that
Thank you! I’ll check it out, it seems to have quite a few good suggestions.
Mostly, I just don’t know much about hardware in general. I’m sure I could follow a tutorial online on how to put it together, but I don’t know much about what I’d need to buy in the first place.
I’ll look online and see what I can find though, this does seem like what I’m going to have to do to get the specs I want.
If this isn’t the right community to post this, please let me know, and I’ll take it down. I don’t want to cause any trouble, I’m just looking for help. I’m really new to this kinda stuff.
+1 from me, this is a pretty nice feature
For real!
I have autism, and I swear, dealing with other neurodivergant people is a true pain in the rear. It really puts it into perspective just how frustrating I probably am when my condition makes me into the world most dense and forgetful person in the room. I know I hate it when other people act the way I sometimes do subconsciously.
Personally? Onboarding.
I’ve looked at the instructions on how to install peertube several times now, but its just not worth the hassle at this point. Until I can run it in just a single docker image, without an external database or email service required, then I’m not going to bother.
Its really frustrating, because I really like the project, but I just don’t have the ability to use services like it without docker or podman.
Fair enough. I’ve never been, don’t much like coffee, and I can’t say I ever plan to go there. They don’t sound like the most pleasant of places to relax in.
I don’t think I’ve ever checked, but I can get behind that. I’d rather not die because a company decided to cut corners.
Completely inexcusable. How people can get away with this kind of behaviour is beyond me.
Huh, I didn’t know about that. I only bought mine because they were the only ones the store offered, but I guess I’ll try to find another brand when it comes time to replace them. I’ve been meaning to get a new NAS sometime anyway, so that’s a good excuse as any to do so.
Good enough for me, I’ll avoid them in the future.
Relatable. I’m in a pretty Apple heavy area, so I’m in the minority in my dislike of anything Apple. At least they are easy to avoid, with how obvious they make their branding.
Not entirely sure yet. I do know that whatever I get, I’ll be installing Linux on it instead of android. I might try out one of those de-googled android copies, but I’m not sure.
I’ve got my eye on the rugged survival phone market though. They seem to have different priorities than everyone else, and it seems to really improve the quality of the phones. I haven’t yet found anything that exactly matches my personal requirements though, and most of them are unpopular enough that Linux support is unlikely to ever happen.
Overall, I’ll probobly have to settle for something less than optimal.
