One big thing you need to think about is accessibility. This is something that came up in a conversation with a local representative in the UK - for children in public schools it is a requirements that any technology have good accessibility and not leave anyone behind. And accessibility tools on linux are, suffice to say, not great. Especially when compared with those on other closed systems. My local government ended up going with iPads for kids in schools, and the accessibility tooling on these was a factor in that choice.

Technology@lemmy.world•GTA 6 leaks prompt Take-Two to subpoena Microsoft for Windows device IDs of everyone in three Discord servers — daily gameplay leaks shatter cloud of secrecy around the much-hyped gameEnglish
1·26 days agoIndie games are good, but if privacy is a concern be careful of any game developed in a big engine like unity. My firewall pings a warning every time I launch a unity game because they all send analytics data back to unity. If it’s single player and you block all outgoing connections by default, you’re fine though.

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Youtube Disliked the Dislikes
15·3 months agoFor a long time after they removed the 5 star system, if you subscribed to a channel via RSS, it would show you the like/dislike data for videos as a 5 star rating. You can’t see it easily any more but I suspect, due to tech debt, youtube’s internals are still using the 5 star rating.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Have Nvidia drivers on Linux gotten worse over later generations?
14·10 months agoThe drivers run OK, but because they were not built for my distribution with the right flag, when I sleep and resume my system, I need to log out and back in to the desktop or else it bugs out.
Is this the drivers fault for not having that be a default flag? The maintainers fault for not using the correct flags? Waylands fault for not interfacing with the driver right on resume? My fault for having the audacity to want to use the sleep function?
I have no clue, but it doesn’t happen with the open source nouevau drivers, so I’m inclined to place a fair bit of the blame with nvidia.

A website generator built by a human still gave a human the chance to make some choices, feel useful, validate it worked right, possibly even an income.

5·11 months agoI shifted my desktop this past month, happy to be part of the extra fractions of a % point.
Ubuntu 25.10 finally seems to have resolved a lot of the issues I’ve had in the past, so I think this shift will be permanent.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Beyond Left and Right. Digital ID is Everyone’s Enemy
1·1 year agoYes, if the government was sane and allowed a physical card as an alternative/backup, but the UK gov wants to make it digital only.
Some important context here is that Switzerland already has a national ID card system, this is an extension allowing people to use a digital version if they prefer.
I’m not saying that isn’t going to be without its privacy concerns, but them narrowly voting that in is a far cry from, oh I don’t know, the UK government forcing an entirely new scheme on people without a referendum.
