4·1 month agoWell those fiber optic line end points are not exactly encrypted, they use off the shelf components like HDMI over Fiber adapters, and serial over fiber for control link. In rare cases they could maybe use a actual IP connection over fiber but i doubt that since, it would add overhead, latency and make the hardware setup a lot more complex and expensive (if would be able to encrypt tho).

4·1 month agoBut the drone needs to keep sending it, or the drone will just continue after it’s gone.
unless it injects a detonation command

7·1 month agothats a very good question, let me suggest 2 more options:
-
It injects laser into the fiber, coded identical to the command that would be used to detonate the drone.
-
It dosent need to fully burn thru the whole fiber, just melt it a tiny bit to increase fiber losses to a point where the connection fails

Open Source@lemmy.ml•An open source repairable printer.
45·2 months agobecause it makes it way more easy to build such a “open source” printer, the print head with all its mems chips structures is already on the ink cardrige, meaning hardware wise this thing is just a 2 stepper motors, one for x and y axis.
laser/led printers would be in fact the superior printer, but it would also be way more complex hardware wise.
uhhh i just switch to default techtnology filler talk when there is silence…i doubt him listening to me lammenting 60min about the pros and cons of different types of signal modulation gets me or him anywhere but at least he gets paid for listening

3·5 months agoWe not talking about downing jet powered drones here, we talking about Quadcopters with fragile Props, and making them crash next to the target instead of into it. This thing isnt supposed to have 3km reach. The specs say 25m and i am confident that that is realistic and more would be also impossible without a runaway in optical recognition requirements and runaway in mechanical complexity. Key of this system over a Singular turret mounted machine gun is that in can engage multiple Drones from different directions at the same time hence countering a saturation attack that would normaly overwhelm existing active protection systems.

1·5 months ago6J x 80 BBs/s x 4 Barrels per target direction = 1920J of energy per second on target.
What good is a Singular high energy bullet if it dosent hit. Dosent take much to break a spinning prop of a drone…

1·5 months agoI was thinking about hop up integration, but due to the rotation of the whole thing that would create some very strange paths for the BBs, basically a cork screw and that would make the calculations for aiming a lot harder

4·5 months agoFor a real EMP style weapon check out https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epirus_Leonidas
Thing is, proving drones against those will be rather easy (if they are fiber controlled at least) just wrap the whole thing in a wiremesh should do it (adjust hole size depending on frequency).

4·5 months agoI assume that the vehicle has some protection already and that a small shape charge (possibly angled in the wrong direction due to drone impacting with ground) that goes off like 5m next to the vehicle should not render it out of action. It may be a different situation if the drone carries a EFP or a claymore type warhead that detonates a fair distance away from the vehicle (i have not seen those in common use against vehicle by now tho).

no, because often its not “internet/network over fiber” stuff but HDMI over fiber no ip there. HDMI cables have very limited lenght due to high frequency beeing used in em, so if you have a media production company and a few spread out cameras HDMI over fiber is kinda common
