This is the biggest problem with Valve at the moment. They’re awesome, but only because of the current leadership. Once these guys retire or die, it’s very likely Valve will enshittify like every other business.

I think you’re confused by the purpose of that statement. When the authors say not to use it for anything important, they’re basically trying to waive liability (informally). It’s kind of like how every open source license has a statement like:

THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED “AS IS”, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED …

If you use an open source project for air traffic control software, and a bug causes a bunch of people to die, that’s your fault, not the author of the software. The CLIP people are essentially saying that you shouldn’t use their software to build something that requires a lot of accuracy since it probably wasn’t designed to be as accurate as you need it to be.

But what I’m wondering is why you’re being so dramatic about this. You’re claiming that it’s highly dangerous/reckless/risky to use it, yet hand waving over the why.

I’m a fan of beancount and it’s corresponding web interface fava.

Since the underlying format is human readable text, it’s easy to edit by hand, and you can send the raw file to your accountant as-is and they should have no issues understanding it.

Idk, but not anything that uses delta compression like git does.

Game developers use Perforce and Plastic scm which is (supposedly) optimized for images and other binary assets. I’ve never used them, but I’m sure a less-overkill and open source alternative exists somewhere.

People use Adobe because it’s what they know and they don’t want to learn something else. There are already alternatives to Adobe products, probably better than whatever these people will be able to make with that budget.

If you refuse to pay rent, you are breaching a contract that you signed, which is not considered criminal (ever, afaik).

Ordering food at a restaurant probably doesn’t count as a contract, so it’s just regular theft (which is criminal).
