Car free is pretty great. Was out until 3am for new years eve. Took the train home. Waited about 5 minutes on the platform for it.

Other passengers in the train car? A disgustingly cute couple in their early 20s sharing headphones. A late 20s lady playing phone games. A mid 30s lady who was falling down drunk and her man, eating pizza, helping her stay awake.

That last couple especially benefitted from taking the train. They were in no shape to drive.

It kind of bothers me that people use “introvert” to mean like “crippling social anxiety and agoraphobia”.

Maybe it’s just online spaces accumulate more people who identify with those disorders, and “introvert” sounds nicer .

Tabletop RPGs are a good and cost effective hobby. You can play DND with the free “SRD” rules posted online, but you won’t get the fancy pictures and all the extras.

There are other games like it that are even cheaper. My personal favorite is Fate. Free rules, only needs four six sided dice.

The main problem is finding a good group to play with. DND is mega popular so if you’re just looking for social, it’s a good starting point. If you’re not into fantasy, you can branch off into other games later.

Sometimes I think they’d make more money for the shareholders if they did a good job.

There’s definitely a lot of cargo cult* thinking in software. People don’t understand the why of things but they want the results. That’s why most “agile” I’ve seen is a waste of time.

*Is there a less problematic phrase for this?

I’ve wasted entire days with people like that because they couldn’t be fucking arsed reading error messages and figuring things out by themselves.

I’ve had a couple interview tasks that are like “clone this repo and run it. Try to do [action]. Tell us any errors you find and how to fix them”

One of them was some sort of redux app, and the problem was a state mutation. Another one, the CSS had some weird so stuff rendered crazy. Both were pretty easy to track down and fix. You could probably also do something that’s like an error thrown, but people would probably just feed that into an AI now.

One of the guys I worked with said be prefers the chatbot because stack overflow always made him feel stupid when he’d ask for help. The emotional dimension is big for some people.

I just recommend checking things from the live boot environment. I found out once that some things didn’t work (HDMI , Ethernet, Wi-Fi) only after installing, and it was a hassle. Ended up switching to a different distro that did work out of the box.

While we don’t all need to become total vegans, reducing the number of domesticated animals would have a significantly positive impact on both the environment and the quality of those animals’ lives.

This is where I’m at. Half-assed vegetarian. I don’t buy meat but if someone serves it at a dinner I don’t refuse to eat. Baby steps. It’s making progress without the shock of an abrupt change all at once.

The worst is when people don’t know how the system works, and then won’t listen to answers

Like I was at a job and product was going on about “our system has no concept of project owner. We have all these projects but there’s nothing unifying them under a single owner. We need to build this!”

I was like “… what? That’s just not true. There’s a “company” object that does that. It’s got a foreign key with project in the database. I guess it’s a weird name but it’s there”

It took several back and forths over multiple meetings. They eventually got on the same page and I saved us doing a whole useless project, but they did insist I rename it to “account” in the database and code. I would’ve rather left it because that could’ve been dicey, but alas. (The rename did go out fine, but I had to go looking for every reference.)

For the code, open source is probably the way to go. People should be able to build from source. Otherwise, how do they know you’re not doing something shady. Open source is generally a net improvement on security, assuming people actually look at it.

For screenshots, first fix it so the screenshots render nicely on narrow displays.

Would probably need to be open source to be trustworthy. Running a random executable from the Internet seems dicey.

I’m unclear how you find another user and verify who they are.

Website should have a clearer feature list. The user manual wants to download a text file instead of showing it in the browser.

I don’t know if YouTube is full Nazi bar, but it’s pretty close. You shouldn’t go to the Nazi bar just because they have good cocktails and there are some good performers at the open mic.

Sometimes you have to skip things you like. There’s other content and other platforms.

I pretty much only use YouTube to look up specific clips of things (eg: simpsons clips, bits from movies), the very occasional video game “how do I do this specific thing?”, and specific songs i don’t have a copy of. I never watch any of its original content. I’m sure some of it is fine, but sturgeon’s law says most of it is crap, and there’s so much non-crap already on my radar to read/watch/listen to.

So fuck youtube.

People’s inability to grapple with cognitive dissonance, and how people often go with “I’m a good person making good choices” instead of the more difficult path of changing, is part of why everything is so horrible.

The local bodegas (deli/convenience store) do a burger and fries for like $10. I don’t eat McDonald’s but that seems pretty close in price.

Getting people to care is strangely hard. I think it’s because accepting some of the things we want people to care about means grappling with how the world is unfair and fucked up, and people are emotionally just not ready for that. People are stupid cowards.

I feel like there should be circumstances where if you’re accused of something and found innocent, you need to be made whole. Maybe that’s a huge payout. Maybe you get all your stuff back.

If the police bring you in for questioning because you were riding your bike, and you’re shown innocent, they should pay out like $500/hour to you.
