Only if you want brand new games and top spec hardware. I get free games every day, and I can play them on my old laptop, my dedicated handheld, or even my phone!

Absolutely agree with this philosophy even though I find it hard to stick to. Maybe it was growing up with access to only a couple of games making me feel the need to eke out every second of value, but I do now need to tell myself if you’ve given it a proper go and aren’t really enjoying it then just move on, you have an ever growing backlog of other things to try out. It’s especially difficult with the live service fomo dark patterns that try to keep you coming back without you realising that you’ve just formed a habit rather than are really enjoying them!

As I said, just for fun. Not everyone creates art for money or reputation. Obviously you do need someone to pay the bills though, hence everything Google has done with youtube over the years.

It wasn’t always this way, plenty of people made great youtube videos just for fun before there was any kind of “monetisation”. Sure, there weren’t the highly polished big budget videos (which would probably have been on tv back in the day), but there also wasn’t all the like-and-subscribe sponsored shit which makes the internet so unpleasant nowadays.

Selling the pirated stuff, I guess? I don’t really follow it, but whenever I hear a judgement like this it’s usually from someone actually making money from selling pirated games rather than just cracking or distributing.

I’ve been trying to play the (official, free but now delisted) port of the original Sonic with touch controls. It’s a well-made port with some QoL features but it’s really bloody hard to control without the physical feedback of buttons!
