Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•suddenly getting married not for love but to pool resources and pay less in taxes doesn't look like a bad idea. Am I broken?English
16·12 days agoYou’re reacting to the increasing costs of the means of basic existence. In a way it’s rational, though going as far as marriage is a big commitment. If you found someone who felt exactly the way you do and is willing to marry you for the same reasons, I don’t see anything wrong with going through with it. You’d definitely want a prenuptual agreement in case it doesn’t work out, though.
It might be easier to live with friends or family and pool resources with them, though ofc it wouldn’t be the same tax benefit. Maybe talk to a professional accountant to learn if you have ways to save on taxes even without getting married.

Political Memes@lemmy.world•Would you support the Gun Act?English
48·22 days agoConservatives and the right don’t care if they’re being hypocritical or ignoring how this applies to something they do like. They want the SAVE act because it will benefit them or their side, specifically, not because it’s “a good law for everyone” and they don’t want a gun version of it because it will restrict them, specifically. they’d probably be fine with a gun version that only restricts Democrats, “the left”, trans people, people of color, and any other “outsider”.

27·22 days agoIMO we need these business owners to be part of the community bc otherwise the task is too big to map and update all these millions of places with a small, ideological group. i don’t think they should have any control over reviews or anything though

3·2 months agoAmerican racism is pervasive and there are idiosyncratic ways in which it is expressed here, but Europe and Asia, for example, have their big and small ways of expressing it too. look at how people from Africa or Turkey are treated in Europe, or groups like the Sami, Romani, Uighur, and indigenous peoples everywhere. As another example, Latin America has pervasive colorism, which can also appear in pseudoscientific ways.
none of this is to excuse or minimize American racism. it’s one of the nation’s core atrocities. I just want people in other places to admit how much of a problem it is where they are too.

4·2 months agostructural racism and overt racism exist in America and most other places too.
all Americans grow up in the racist society that exists here, some of them attempt to fight it, many others don’t like it but don’t find a way to resist. others actively build and support it.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why does society treat people they consider unattractive poorly? Are these social hostilities, dejections, prejudices & discrimination causing unattractive people to flock to lookmaxxing communities?English
1·2 months agoI’m no expert, but if we have a hierarchy of beautiful/youthful looking people above regular folks, then yeah people are going to do some wild, desperate stuff to try to get that edge. capitalism and hierarchy pressure us all to get every advantage we possibly can.
looksmaxxing itself is based on incel delusions about how women choose men, taking societal hierarchies and pressures I’ve been talking about and viewing them as biological/evolutionary (which is nonsense)

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why does society treat people they consider unattractive poorly? Are these social hostilities, dejections, prejudices & discrimination causing unattractive people to flock to lookmaxxing communities?English
6·2 months agoWhat we view as attractive is socially constructed and varies over time and place. See e.g. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0738081X23000251
Youth and health are probably a proxy for fertility, so that would be related to physical attraction, but why should that affect how we treat people? That’s not a reason to favor the young or to disfavor the old. Not only that, but community care of children meant everyone had a role in the greater sense of “fertility”.

5·2 months agoThe wealthy surround themselves with beautiful people, get blood transfusions from young people, get cosmetic surgery. In our stories, good characters are usually portrayed as beautiful or handsome and often young. Successful characters, whether good or evil, are often beautiful or handsome. Regular-looking folks more often appear as side characters or comedic characters instead.
this view is encouraged by the fashion, skincare and cosmetics industries (not that there’s anything wrong with fashion, skincare, or cosmetics per se).
So we are all being conditioned to worship or favor beauty and youth.
