Enshittification@slrpnk.net•Where to buy a non-Apple, non-Google smartphoneEnglish
3·3 days agoYou may not be able to get the Jolla C2 in the US. But you can get a Sony Xperia 10 III from jolla-devices sent to the US. I ordered one without any trouble. I can receive phone calls and SMS on Mint Mobile just fine too.
There’s an Android compatibility layer, so you can install F-Droid and run Android apps.
Drawback, is that SailfishOS has some proprietary, closed source parts.
Otherwise, the phone is pretty solid. Phone works, SMS works, Android apps work, camera works, Mint Mobile works.

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•How common was video game piracy in the 90s?English
2·6 days agoAaaah, the PS1. I have a good memory of visiting my cousin in Mexico City, where he told me he had someone tinker with his PS1 so he could play pirated games. Next time I visited, I brought my PS1 and it worked!

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Do you rinse your plates and cutlery before putting them in the dishwasher?English
8·9 days agoOK, I also saw that Technology Connections video…
BUT counter point: I rinse, scrape, wipe stuff off of the dishes before loading, but not because I don’t think the dishwasher can’t handle it. Rather, I don’t want crap to accumulate inside of the dishwasher. Cleaning the filter and other parts with a ton of crap is disgusting, so I’m trying to minimize the material that goes into the dishwasher.
I recently found out my wax ring for my toilet was leaking. I noticed because water started leaking out from the base of the toilet. When I lifted the toilet, I found the wax ring almost entirely intact. The entire ring was very black.
That’s why I made this post. Because I have leaky wax rings.
I bought this house 5 years ago. 🤷 IDK why things started failing now.

Self-hosting@slrpnk.net•Do I belong in tech anymore? - On quitting, the spread of AI, and the loss of an ideal.English
7·12 days agoExactly what I’m feeling… I don’t know of any companies that aren’t drinking the koolaid. My friend recently got laid off. He suspects it was because it was constantly pushing back on AI slop from other engineers.
I’ve been skipping the AI questions on recent company surveys… a few days ago, my manager directly asked me for “my thoughts on AI” during our 1:1… kinda freaked me out… I didn’t say anything bad about AI, but I also wasn’t gushing over how much I love AI (I hate AI)… I feel like they’re watching me a little more closely now… I’m going to start answering that I love AI on our surveys now… 😢
I don’t feel like they genuinely care about discovering if AI works. The AI questions are usually like: “Do you like AI?” and the answers are like “A: Yes”, “B: FUCK YES”, or “C: omg please more AI!”
Huh, just from browsing the homepage, this seems to be more for searching local files.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Would it be possible to dumb down a linux phone?English
4·13 days agoI know, right! That’s a feature! This… might… just be able to get me off of Whatsapp. I recently learned about Molly, an open source Signal client. They have a F-Droid repo…
If you can install actual Google Play store apps, please don’t tell me. I don’t want to know. Lalalalalalala. 🙉🙉🙉🙉

Linux@lemmy.ml•Would it be possible to dumb down a linux phone?English
5·13 days agoI just started experimenting with SailfishOS, a Linux (non-Android) OS for phones. It’s got an app store, but since it’s not Android the app selection is pretty limited. I was actually wondering if this could be a compromise between full smartphone and full dumbphone.
I am able to run some Android apps, by installing them through F-Droid, like Bitwarden, but it seems like I wouldn’t be able to install Facebook I think? Idk. Literally just got this SailfishOS phone from Jolla Devices yesterday.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Framework announced the Framework 13 Pro with full Linux compatibility from the StartEnglish
24·16 days agoHiDPI has been an issue on Linux for decades. If you’re new to Linux, I’d highly recommend you do not get a HiDPI display. You’re gonna have to apply workarounds to get your apps looking normal and for some apps you might just be stuck with blurry fonts.
If you’re new to Linux and want less problems, avoid HiDPI.
Just look at how big this thread got: https://community.frame.work/t/tracking-state-of-hidpi-on-linux/8301

212·16 days agodoesn’t mean every customer that wants high resolution has to suffer.
There’s no possible solution to this problem. Oh, no. If only someone could invent some way where customers that want to deal with bugs could buy a HiDPI display and customers who just want their software to work could chose a regular DPI display. Like, if 2 options were available or something crazy like that… Idk.
Also yeah, I’m on a super niche DE nobody has ever heard of: GNOME.
I’ve dealt with this first hand. It was so bad I returned my old Framework. Not doing that again. Anyway, looks like nothing has changed. Have fun dealing with scaling issues. ✌️

Linux@lemmy.ml•Framework announced the Framework 13 Pro with full Linux compatibility from the StartEnglish
417·16 days agoIt better not have a HiDPI display… It’s not “fully Linux compatible” if they ship it with a buggy, non-compatible HiDPI display.
“Full Linux support” should mean I don’t have blurry fonts, oddly shaped windows, stuck using only certain DEs, stuck using only certain apps.
Oh, good! That’s exactly what I got!
That insulation needs to go too.
Yep.
Yeah, I believe I’ve removed the leak… see the plastic bag to the left? That’s where a toilet used to be. I’m fairly certain the toilet was leaking… for months… (and I’m an idiot who didn’t associate the smell with mold). The leak made it into the adjacent closet.
Phase one: Remove drywall, carpet, tile. Remediate the mold.
Phase two: Install a new toilet (I didn’t install the previous one.)
The old toilet had a blackened… hardened wax ring. Anyway, that’s a whole different project. Focusing on the mold for now.
Ooh! And you can add an F-Droid repo!

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Cal.com goes closed source “because of security”English
20·17 days agoToday, AI can be pointed at an open source codebase and systematically scan it for vulnerabilities.
Well, then do that.
iknowrite? If these magical scanners can find all the bugs in your code… then why don’t they use these magical scanners to find all their bugs in their code!!! 😂

Wha, why?
