Let me preface what I am going to say with a simple disclaimer. These are my opinions guided by decades of playing games. My opinions likely won’t line up directly with your outlook and that is ok.

I’ve been playing video games every day since 1982. I played Doom the day it was available (as well as the beta that I scammed off a friend of mine), I have played it all, from Zork to Star Citizen.

Never, in all my experience have I come across something like Helldivers 2. It’s a wild fucking ride, every day. It is live service, requires rootkit level anticheat (why? Eh? Why the fuck do you need that level of anticheat for PVE?), and comes with a bizarre sense of community driven by a satirical embrace of fascism.

Malevelon Creek. TCS (and taking down the TCS), the S.O.N.Y. virus, there is so much stuff every day. And the game itself is just fun to play.

Leave your toxicity at the door and come join us for democracy.

Or don’t. Because we know PSN accounts are Sonys end goal and Sony can not be trusted with PII.

Why you should buy it now

I thought you were going to explain why I should buy it now, but you haven’t? I’m playing something else right now so I don’t see a reason to buy it now because later, when I’m actually going to play it, it might be on sale.

I’m broke, so I’ll be playing nice open-source games for me. That, or pirate low-end console games for emulation.

I’m sure it’s fun, really, but having a rootkit in a PVE game and that PSN requirement on top, that all seems fishy. I know Sony backed off for now, but like you said, it’s a live service and they might change it again. I still hope players can enjoy it and have a great time.

It’s a hoard shooter. Most of the time.

The main gameplay loop is as follows.

fly to planet > choose operation > select mission > “helldive” down to the surface to complete an objective (evacuate civilians, launch ICBM, eradicate swarm, etc) > complete optional objectives and gather resources > call down a shuttle and extract back to your ship > spend resources on upgrading gear and your ship > repeat

The ship provides “stratagems”, basically various forms of orbital support. You can call down mechs, orbital bombardments, automated weapon emplacements, etc.

The enemy’s designs are very varied, it’s possible to sneak around them and the gameplay down on planet surfaces is generally just very diverse compared to other hoard shooters. Mission types are many, guns, stratagems and gear are many.

There is also a macro game, where all completed operations contribute to the war effort as a whole. All players are fighting the same galactic war, though each mission is always a four player max instance. Playing on a certain planet will contribute to its occupation/defense/invasion, and what planets the community spends their time on, determines where ground is gained or lost.
