🦜🏴☠️, still not free when considering VPN subscription and self-hosting jellyfin and such, but it has no ads and by far the better selection of content :)
The best decision I’ve made in the last… Year or so was paying for my piracy. Hopefully the shutdown of a certain french-hosted platform continues to be overstated, but even if not, another will take its place.
100%, I’ve been torrenting for my whole life and seriously running Plex/jellyfin for a decade now and only paying $5/Mo for mullvad and don’t have to worry about what service stuff is on - I just get it all.
I recently decided to supercharge my arrstack setup with Usenet (better availability for older stuff, was able to backfill lots of reality TV that only had dead torrents) and even then, since lots of Usenet providers include a VPN that you can use for torrenting, I’m only paying $7 and change per month.
And most of what I spend reoccurring is paid back by friends I’ve shared with buying me drinks and stuff. Easily worth it.
The priciest part of the whole ordeal is buying a NAS and upgrading HDD capacity every few years :D even this comes out cheaper than even 1 stream subscription without ads !
This is so fucked up. My parents pay for prime and still have to watch ads, but they still use it because the competitors aren’t much better.

I know, and I have the ability to do it, but my parents wanna go the legit way. Fair enough ig, but the legit way is objectively bad.

And for TVs there’s always Stremio (or Plex). Who needs subscriptions, when you can instantly stream any show or movie from any platform for free?
Jellyfin and an arr stack is the competitor now.
