Javier Milei, who wants to abolish the central bank and adopt the U.S. dollar as Argentina’s currency, is now the front-runner in the fall general election.
A lot of Latin Americans that I’ve met, from Argentina, Peru or Venezuela have happened to be hardcore libertarians. I have come to guess that they do so because they have seen that it works for the Global North, which is considerably wealthier than their countries are, and as such the logical conclusion is to just follow the same politics they do.
What they don’t understand is that the Global North will never treat them like an equal. They will never see them as anything other than as an asset to exploit, just like it happened with Russia and Yeltsin.
