New pope is some guy from Chicago named Bob.
Discuss.
[Leo XIV] is the first pope named Leo since Leo XIII
Thanks
So, no Pope Pizzaballa then. I guess Pope Deepdish still brings a pizza angle to the table though.
Hey, think of it this way, he might canonise the Blues Brothers.
They were on a mission from god, and they hate Illinois nazis.
If he’s a real one he will prefer to be addressed as pope Tavern Style.

Of course he protected bad priests
Well, he’s elected by priests…
from Chicago
Daaaaa pope
Who would win in a fight, Coach Ditka? Or tha Pope?
Every article at the top of the search results, wiki included, is frustratingly short on details about his psychology and values.
Is he more like Francis or Ratzinger? Is he more like Jesus or the Pharisees?
From what little I’ve read more like Francis, which isn’t surprising considering he appointed the majority of those who just voted.
Apparently he’s a bit more moderate. Similar focus on the poor and immigrants, which apparently Leo 13 was as well (name choice is also a statement, so reading up on whoever has the name before might be worthwhile). But slightly more conservative in regard to lgbtq and women.
He’s like a more moderated Francis. Very much a bureaucratic centrist within the Vatican, but he still supports a lot of the Francis style reforms.
So we’re not going back to papal conservatism, but it’s not like we’re going to push further than Francis.
So basically the old vatican with some vaguely liberal messages.
(In most contexts I’d hate him, but given the overton window of the catholic church well… he’s somewhat good).
Francis, on paper. They’ll come after him for being accused of ignoring child abuse allegations. His local advocates on more progressive-leaning sources here are focefully pushing that it’s a plant from the conservative side to try to keep him out of the running.
I have no awareness either way, but he seems to be perceived as a Francis continuist, for what that’s worth.
Which, of course, in a lifetime position with no offramp is no guarantee of what he’ll do. We’ll see, I suppose.
I don’t think that’s the perception of him. The real perception seems to be that he’s okay with what Francis did but is a little more conservative. I mean here is what the BBC is saying:
There had been talk that cardinals felt the new pope would need to be someone who would take forward Pope Francis’s legacy of reaching out to those on the margins, but also bring along with him a wide spectrum of those within the Church, including those Pope Francis was sometimes at loggerheads with.
Now I don’t know about you, but to me that’s BBC talk for he’s about to walk some shit back. That’s BBC talk for enough with this fucking radical Francis Pope it’s time to get back to real Catholic shit. That’s how I read it.
German News called him a compromise candidate, kind of a moderate middle of the road guy.
I mean… I appreciate the British dysfunction that leads to the concept of “BBC talk”, but our local commentators just… you know, say things.
The read that he’s on Francis’ wavelengths but perhaps less of a reformist isn’t entirely out of sync with the first summaries I saw around here, but this is the Catholic Church we’re talking about, that’s waaaay to the left of the spectrum people were playing with.
Again, we can’t know what he’ll do or the effects it’ll have, but at the very least this was not a win for the counter-reformist cryptofascist wing that was trying to U-turn the whole thing.
EDIT: For the record, from local headlines:
“A profile on Francis’ wavelenght” “One of Francis’ trusted men” “An anti-Trump missionary” “Concerned with social justice but more conservative than Francis”
I think those play without the translation layer.
You can’t make a U-turn till you start turning the wheel. This is a turn. A moderate is a turn. Well Catholic moderate. You ain’t still going straight on the same road. Whether his turn is the beginning of a wider turn or just a squiggle we can’t know yet, but it ain’t continuation is my point. And here’s the thing about the counter reformists, this is a victory for them. When it’s less reform it’s a victory.
Idk if this was recently edited but on Wikipedia it says he has used phrases like “gender ideology”, has opposed women joining some kind of religious group or activity, and has opposed teaching about gender in Peru. He’s a conservative bigot, as far as I can tell.
Yeah, apparently he voted for a Republican recently, making him complicit in USA’s rapid decent into fascism.
The US Christian Nationalists are big mad, so I’ve got hope.
The Wikipedia editors are fast. Good job
Pope Bob I would have been so much better
Huh, “only” 69 years old. He’ll likely be around for a while.
Takes “Leo” as his regnal name. Does that mean none of his choir boys will be over 25 years old?
New old fuck, new chance to do something about pedophiles.
Doubtful, though, since he’s ignored it for a while now
as have all of them, otherwise they wouldn’t even be considered for the position of pope
Their universities are 22 minutes drive or 17.5 miles apart. Trump was so on point that I still can’t believe how the fuck it happened.
I’d love to see a pope in my lifetime be the first and not the Roman Numeralth.
francis?
Were you born in the last two weeks?
