The definition of a soul will entirely depend on your personal religious beliefs. I’m pretty sure in the case of Anthropic trying to convince people that Claude has a soul, they were using the Judeo-Christian version that is the part of you that is you and that will continue on after your death into the afterlife.
I think it’s safe to say any talk of LLMs having ‘souls’ is basically smuggling Descartes in through the back door. To be honest I think this of all claims intelligence is substrate-independent.
