As an American it was always somewhat puzzling to understand the deeper drivers of cultural differences between the Canadian provinces having never been anywhere but BC and briefly, but the book “On Oil” is a great recent history of the spread of oil culture and money in Alberta, the Texas influences and ties there and helps frame why so much money and media influence is being welded against Canadian values and democracy right now.
Used to work with an Irishman in Vancouver. We were drinking in a bar by site after work on a Friday and I had to stop him from starting a fight with a group of 6 Newfs because he thought they were making fun of him.
We ended up having a good laugh with them about it after he’d chilled out, but it was touch and go for a minute there…
I was at the bar with my Uncle when we were talking to a Newfoundlander and non-Newfoundlander. The non-Newfoundlander was amazed my Uncle could understand the Newfoundlander.
Fun fact, the root word of “Viking” in old norse is “vík” which means a bay or inlet. The literal translation of the word Viking then is “Bayman”, which if you know Newfies well, is a term they are very familiar with. A thousand years and the meaning of the term hasn’t really changed that much.
I’ve had the pleasure of talking to Newfies on occasion despite being Californian, I legit didn’t realize their accent is hard for some folks to understand. Probably has to do with me speaking a weird amalgam hick accent though.
Lots of cattle farming in Alberta too, so there isn’t a lot of new age thinkers there who care about factory farming pollution of water systems, and that all that farm land could feed more people, and the terrible conditions animals live in.
So when I’ve gone on work trips all the food places at hotels and events are all beef/rib products and fries. Finding a salad or some vegetarian protien is difficult.
I went on a two-three day work trip and lost 5lbs from lack of food choices.
Talking to them is like being in Hicksville, with lifted smokey diesel trucks, etc.
I’m calling bullshit. I live here. We have plenty of vegetables, salads, and vegetarian food around the province. Even in our smaller shithole, redneck, hellhole towns. There’s more than enough to criticize about this province without making shit up.
That’s been my experience at Calgary hotels and trade shows…as well as interacting with people.
One food court had Burger place, rib place, kabob place, some other meat place. My option was fries. The hotel option was fries except those were beef fat cooked.
If that doesn’t represent Calgary, then the business and hospitality industry has to step up, because hotels and business events are where outsiders meet your ciry

It’s short and incredibly informative. https://www.biblioasis.com/shop/new-releases/on-oil/

Sorry, transplanted Nova Scotian in Ontario. I love Newfoundlanders. I just can’t understand them when they get drunk and start talking to each other.

They were the last region added to Canada and some of them were horrified that Nova Scotia wasn’t as loyal to the crown.

As opposed to the townies eh?
Newfoundland and Labrador is a hidden gem. You have to put it on your list. One of those places you can fall in love with.
Beautiful up there too

Ill paint a picture:
