In America the term liberal has been moved away from the actual meaning (subscribing to the political ideology of liberalism) and become a sort of catch-all term for anything to the left of the far right. Consequently American liberals also start to consider themselves left-wing, even though they are staunchly right-wing.

Because neoliberalism is the main ideology in the west, and the ideology of the regime, it permeates the culture, shaping and reshaping perception, definitions and so on, which then in turn helps maintain the illusion for the American liberal that they are not right-wing. The US liberal wishes for this - to be left wing - since they recognize “right wing” is a negative quality, even if they do not understand what the term actually means.

Yeah, we use it to describe the political ideology of liberalism instead of some vague vibes-based individual definition.

Actually not. The rest of the world use the word “liberal” to mean what most users on my instance use it for as well, since that is the meaning of it.
