According to Automotive News, a September survey published by the think tank Clean Energy Canada showed that 48 percent of respondents want an EV as their next car. And now that Canada will be allowing some Chinese EVs into the market, close to half of those potential customers are willing to wait for them.

No one particularly wants a Chinese EV, they just want affordable cars and China is the only one offering them.

At a work meeting, my boss said she’d never buy a Chinese car. Our warehouse manager, who’s known for stirring the pot, told her most of the key parts in her current car were made in China anyway. My boss’s brain blew a gasket at that realization (no pun intended).

Man, I wish I had popcorn during that meeting.

Yup. Personally I’d be holding out for a Rivian but that’s way out of my price range.

None of those companies sell in Canada. Renault will be selling only the premium Alpine brand in 2027.

Renault had a decent presence in the 80s, they sold a lot of Renault 5s in Quebec. But then they had partnerships with Chrysler and made shit cars that ruined the brand. Citroen left the CDN market in 1974. The cars rusted just looking at them.

I was saying that this morning about that stupid ‘flying’ Tesla thing. I don’t want cars that can jump 30 feet in the air, people are dumb enough on the ground.

A much better presentation would be to have an electric car at the presentation, then a person gets in it and drives to the store and comes back, and then a caption says “This costs $15k”.

Or, have a Tesla jump 30 feet in the air and then land on Elon Musk lol, I’d accept that

The majority of the Chinese import permits went to Chinese-produced Teslas.

Nobody’s getting 15k EVs in Canada.

Exactly this. Not dropping 70K for an electric vehicle that was designed to crap out after 5 years.

The only country selling EV’s/hybrids to Canada that actually meet at least my needs is China. Its not even about price at this point, its that the current market doesn’t even try to be competitive or develop good electric vehicles.

What good is a 40km battery when my daily commute is 150km? What good is a 350km battery when i do quarterly 650km day trips, and can’t afford the time to charge the vehicle (no, I can’t ‘do other things’ while the car is charging, the charger is a 20 minute drive from the nearest store/restaurant/etc).

40km is the average actual charge on available PHEV’s (including my Escape, which Ford has discontinued), because the NA market thinks PHEV’s are a joke. Also would like to note I lost (according to Ford) ~18% of my range recently due to them using shit parts in their batteries.

The MHERO II coming in at some point has an electric range of 150km, which, for me, is actually useful.

There are no cars in NA that have a real-life range of 650km, at least under $100k. I know Tesla claims the Model 3 can, but I have strong doubts that’s true, especially in the winter (plus I would never touch a Musk product). China has a few lines with ~700km range, that are cold-weather tested, though not sure if any of those are hitting the Canadian market at a reasonable price.

          my hybrid gets 660km range.

Why complain about PHEV range when PHEVs are designed for typical commutes, not 150km. Sounds like your lifestyle is going to take a lot of gas money.

Your hybrid gets 660km with a full tank and full charge. I was discussing specifically the charged range, not fuel. I am complaining that there aren’t any reasonable options currently available in Canada for me to reduce my fuel usage, and I am looking forward to there being better options soon.

My commute isn’t by choice, the travel costs are just significantly lower than the cost to move somewhere better, and my household income can’t really support dropping everything and just going somewhere else.

Get a SWTCH home charger. Mine goes to full in an hour and they pay me for it and the charger itself is free ($300 deposit, refunded after an amount of use that I hit in a month or two)
Edit: oh, but that doesn’t help you on the longer day trips. Is that 650k in one day?

I have a Chargepoint charger (BC Hydro gave rebates on them).

Yes, 650km in one day, preferably under 12 hours including shopping and whatever appointments we have. It’s why I have a PHEV and not a full EV.

Closer to 8, once you factor in the in-town driving, yes.

Living in Northern BC sucks, that round trip every 2-6 months saves me a stupid amount of money on groceries and essentials, even factoring in fuel/charging, though a hotel would eat into those savings pretty bad.

I also do this a few times a year with my PHEV, but for my next car, I’m still considering a 100% EV, and maybe rent an ICE for my 2 or 3 longer trips.

Spending 8 hours in a car rather than working 8 hours is questionable financially, so I try to combine vacations with doing useful things, and most of my trips include a vacation part and a useful part. Nothing wrong with taking a few days off each year by extending weekends. Only you know your exact numbers of course. Ok I’m out now. This is all I can do here. Cheers.
