The Motorola Signoture phone has finally released… And it’s utterly expensive with a price pf $1600. Jeez. Only the rich can get privacy, I guess. Might as well buy the outdated Pixel 10
By comparison, way better specs for the money than anything the fruit or search company sell.
Wherever there’s a cellular connection there’s no Privacy
They boast with a 200-megapixel camera and like 4 more 50-megapixel cameras (my current phone doesn’t even have one 50 MP camera), 12–16 gigabytes of RAM (not even my laptop has that much), a super bright screen (I normally keep my phone at less than 50% brightness anyway, full brightness is only ever useful in direct sunlight), etc. etc. All I want is a phone that works for calls, messaging, calendar, alarms, etc. without leaking my information to amerikkkan companies. I’m hoping they come out with a less over-featured phone that can support GrapheneOS at a more reasonable price point soon enough. It is worth keeping in mind that earlier they were talking about 2027, and this one will be up for sale in 11/26, so I’m staying hopeful that this is just a super-premium “preview”.
You wish for a fair phone my friend.
What I want to know is whether all anti-privacy money is subsidizing other brands’ phones.
Is this the real price of a good phone hardware if the end user’s data isn’t the product being sold?
Most cannot afford to build their own and are at the mercy of ODM/MFG capacity.
Most cannot afford to command a large volume order of units, so they cannot get any discount on the prosu tioj cost and the sticker price of building their supply chain and distribution.
And nobody can get discounts on RAM. Not Valve. Not Apple.
The thing is, if we just keep writing the existing Supply of used Hardware from the evil empire company in 3 years time who do you think will still be available to spin up a project like this?
Doing the right thing is going to cost a premium AND if you don’t do it soon the option may be off the table permanently.
What is “outdated” in phones these days?
I’ve been rocking a used Pixel 8 Pro that I picked up for $200. I put Graphene on it right away. I don’t feel like I’m missing anything. Graphene is so stripped down and minimalistic that I don’t feel like a newer phone would in any way enhance my experience. I don’t install anything that touches google, microsoft, or a techbro ai company, so a special ai processor doesn’t mean anything to me.
Performance is good. Battery life is great.
I’m still using a Pixel 6 Pro, and Pixel 8 Pro is what I would probably upgrade it to
Everything you said is valid. However, I see many times people putting GrapheneOS on older pixels and while this works perfectly fine performance wise, on the security aspect is a different topic. Users that install the OS on a pixel want a robust security system that also protects your privacy. A newer pixel has the hardware and chips to support against more sophisticated attack vectors and many times vulnerabilities haven’t been identified in the wild and it takes time for people to exploit them.
So while yes it makes no sense to buy an extremely expensive phone with multiple cameras and unnecessary features, a device with the newest chips is very significant to complete your security stack on your phone.
I think the best decision people can make is to keep or move to a pixel 10 and wait for next year when new phones should have removable batteries. By this time we can also expect other Motorola phones compatible with Graphene.
I’m still using Pixel 6a bought 3 years ago and only had battery replaced mostly due to “security concern” on pixel phones, but now it holds up to 2 full days without charging when not heavy used.
I’m using average 4,5 out of 6GB of ram, phone runs perfectly smooth with no clutters and is reasonably sized to hold and use comfortably.
If not upcoming EOL, I wouldn’t change it for another 3 years or even more. I really dont understand why people need those pumped up 7" bricks with computing power of older PC and price of an used car.
Hopefully they eventually launch something that is actually affordable. Until then I guess I will have to stick to used Pixels.
Yeah, that’s more than my monthly income. Shit, a used recent pixel is pushing it for me, 1600 is a no go
Maybe the point is precisely to price out regular people. Nice try, Motorola, but ima stick to my pixel to sell drugs.
Motorola is on the official UN company list that supports genocide and aiding the IDF with killing / displacing indigenous Palestinians and Lebanese civilians.

Lenovo’s Motorola Mobility LLC makes the Signature 27. Motorola Solutions, Inc. and subsidiaries have been separate since 2011.
Can you share the link, please.
Thanks :)
How does buying the Sig27 or not, effect Motorolas use in Israel?
if you feel comfortable giving your hard earned money to a company that is blacklisted by the United Nations for participation of a genocide of kids,— yes israel is literally killing children and Motorola is actively participating in that.
Then nothing i say as an answer to your question will matter.
Note: you can see the UN listed two motorolla entities, one is an israel subsidiary that was created to wash the corporate name, but then further investigation clearly established that the mother corporation is still supplying IDF with technology to continue performing terrorist state activity.
Two legal entities doesn’t mean they’re washing their corporate name, both are still called Motorola. It’s completely normal to have subsidiaries for countries you have employees or do a lot of business in, it greatly simplifies accounting. It’s even normal to have subsidiaries for your different business activities. I suspect Motorola is actually quite proud of their work in Israel, it’s an American company after all.
Buying a phone from Motorola Mobility, a completely unrelated company owned by the Chinese spyware company Lenovo, gives money to neither of those companies.
Instead, you’d want to avoid using telecoms that use Motorola tech. In North America that includes Verizon, AT&T, Bell, Rogers and Telus, possibly others. Europe has too many to even find.
Chinese spyware company Lenovo
I’d much rather give my data to a Chinese company than a USian one.
Yes I understand all of that. I also understand that Motorola is a large conglomerate with several separate corporate divisions that are largely unrelated, so the buisness of one division has no effect on another.
But if you feel comfortable with mearly performic symbols of ineffective action, nothing I can say will matter to you.
As i said earlier nothing i would say will matter to you if you think boycotting a UN blacklisted corporate is debatable
But you aren’t boycotting Motorola Solutions.
You’re boycotting Motorola Mobility. They’re two seperate and unrelated companies.
And why exactly should I care?
As if your phone or whatever else hardware (And especially software) you own or use is “clean”.

Wow, what an intelligent take. Impressive. Go change the worl, boycott a thing you don’t really need and feel superior. As if I’d care 😁
I don’t think they’re the one trying to feel superior here
no one is forcing you to care.
it just when you scream that you don’t care about children being bombed to pieces in schools and hospitals, this shows who you really are on a human level.
I didn’t “scream”. That’d be literally the opposite of “i don’t care” :-) So Motorola is evil. What about brands that indirectly murder adults? or exploit children as work-force? Or are suppliers of war-machinery? Or just make lenses for scopes that are exclusively to kill people. Noone REALLY cares. All those brands are still fully operational. Chiquita bananas are still everywhere, to just name one. Whatever any brand does, it’s forgotten tomorrow, money is king and will always triumph over morals. Like it or not (I don’t btw). Your opinion and boycott won’t make the slightest difference in the end.
I’m old enough to have seen tons of those “protests” and “boycotts” of oh-so-evil-companies come and especially go again. This one will be no different.
What about bla bla bla.
anyone can tell that your brain is having a hard time comprehending what a genocide means, maybe go educate yourself a bit, instead of screaming that you dont care about a filthy terrorist state like Israel then trying to justify working with companies to ethnically cleanse children.
Or maybe you are just filthy Zionist, justifying killing childrens.
either way STFU.
Lol.
Go boycott a brand, I don’t give a shit. Do you care so much for ALL genocide or only those that affect you? And does it go beyond boycotting things you don’t need or can’t afford anyway? Thought so, mighty keyboard-warrior. And I will STFU now. Suggest the same to you.
Average .zip / zio user
Because BDS works?

“signiture” “signoture” the poor motorola signature 27 already has an identity crisis, flagships are a daft choice anyway.
“see? privacy doesnt sell!”
It also has a glued in battery, for all I know.
This device is not longevity-oriented
I was hoping for something cheaper, but with the price of everything these days I can’t say I’m surprised. I’ll probably start saving up while I wait for more news.
I don’t even know that we can take it for granted that the phone will work with all carriers in the US. We’ve got some basic specs and that’s literally it so far.
Its phone camera uses generative AI. So you’re not taking pictures that that distance, youre just making stuff up.
I think that’s in the lenseless phones that they’re planning to push in the next few years
I am not sure what the downvotes are for, they say themselves that at “100x super zoom” generative AI comes in.
A flagship with android? No thanks. Graphene is muuuch bettet than any other android, but it’s still android.
Gimme a Linux flagship. Or anything else beyond crapple or google.
But Linux is far from secure. Although Graphene OS is also not very secure. We need an operating system written in Rust and with micro kernel I guess
https://grapheneos.org/faq#roadmap
Apparently GrapheneOS wants to eventually become an independent OS with its own kernel, which would be awesome to see. I think RedoxOS and Genode are two other relevant projects so it would be interesting to see if they ever merge together in some way (which I also saw Genode had an aspiration of being a base for QubesOS eventually). Although for now it seems like they’re not in a good state to replace Linux and Android, and it seems like QubesOS is struggling to catch up with modern technology.
Fair point, but I actually was more thinking of PRIVACY than technical security. Though some minority niche linux-phones sure are safer than some android. Just because noone cares for them :-)
Calling the safest OS in the world ‘not very safe’ is sure a take.
It may well be the most secure, but it’s not enough. Palantir is watching people from all over the world
Do you have evidence that Palantir has cracked GrapheneOS?
My Pixel 6 with Graphene OS was acting very weird like overheating out of nowhere, disconnecting vpn over and over. I stopped using it
You can believe in whatever you want
