Arnold is 6’2" and was ~250 pounds in his peak body building days. Andre was 7’4" and ~500 pounds. There were lots of huge dudes at the time but Andre really was kind of in a league of his own.

I’m in my early 30’s and I remember the opposition to gay marriage when I was a kid in the 2000’s, it was strong and very visible. This was in a Southern California beach town, not exactly a bastion of conservatism. Hell, Obama was opposed to gay marriage when he first ran for president. Things changed very quickly as we entered the 2010’s.

I don’t think the person you’re responding to is making any claims about AGI. But the fact is, the models are far, far more capable then they were even 3 years ago. I think that has more to do with the harnesses we have now that it does with the models. The models are a bit better (and way bigger) but the harness is where the capability comes from. Software dev has changed significantly in most places because the fact is, this shit is useful for those tasks. People, appropriately or not, are trying to apply that to every office job basically.

I don’t think that’s gonna pan out for anthropic or open AI financially, especially in the long term. But there has been a lot of progress in capability in the last 2-3 years. I think they’re right that if the timing works out badly, many employers could overcommit to AI and then collapse before they can correct once the bubble pops.

I recently played through this, somehow I had never heard of it. Some parts didn’t age great but overall a very fun game. Lots of nazi killing.

I think it’s kind of ablist to assume a disabled person has nothing of value to offer, like if they can’t move a couch then they are excluded. “Moving a couch” could be anything, it could be filing taxes or cooking a meal. Disabled people are good at stuff too. I think it’s really weird for you to make this assumption.

The point of this comment was not to draw a comparison between these 4 cities. I just picked 4 well known southern cities.

I draw the line when you start deliberately targeting people to exclude on the basis of their race or culture.

Also, preventing other people from experiencing a culture does not protect it.

I’ll be real - Atlanta, New Orleans, Nashville, Charleston, etc are all flooded with tourists and immigrants. Now this isn’t me being racist, I’m not even from the South- but there’s a huge difference between these cities that LARP as Southern to tourists and cities in the countryside that genuinely don’t have to. It’s a real shame how the culture has changed in the South, and it’s sad that most foreigners don’t realize that. So I don’t blame residents for recognizing that.

I’m running a 4070 super on my setup with cachyos with zero issues. I never had to do any special setup or anything. I think when I first installed, I was running off the displayport on my motherboard to be safe, but if I remember correctly, the OS detected my Nvidia card and installed the driver automatically. (That or I selected that I wanted Nvidia drivers during the install, I can’t remember which.) Switched the cable over to the card, no issues since.

Everyone complains about Nvidia support on Linux but it’s come a long long way the last few years and it’s honestly just as easy or easier than windows now.

Again, 450 MILLION guns. You can ban them all today, even if everyone agreed, we would be pulling guns out of cellers and closets for the next 100 years. “Ban them all” is not a thing you can just do. That would require a constitutional amendment, one that basically one supports, so good luck with that.

“Anywhere a kid might go” is literally every public place. Concealed carry is not outright banned in any state. I support pretty heavy requirements for concealed carry, but even an outright ban would not prevent this. Even so, most states have very loose requirements (or none at all) and there’s basically no political will to change that.

Teach the kids about guns. This isn’t even a political position, this is a very straightforward policy to mitigate risks that presently exist and are not going away any time soon.

Kids don’t spend 100% of their time at home. They go out in public, they go to friend’s houses, they go to parties. They will, 100% of the time, find themselves in situations where irresponsible people are making decisions. Your job as a parent is to equip your children to navigate an unsafe world.

In some places, that means knowing what to do if you stumble upon a black bear on a trail. In other places, it means knowing what to do if you find a little baggy of white powder on the ground. In the United States, it means your kid should know what to do if they find a handgun in a bathroom at a truck stop while out on a field trip. That is not a situation a parent can prevent unless they are constantly hovering over their child. It’s never likely but it can happen to anyone.

What would be irresponsible is not teaching your kid these skills so that they have to figure it out on their own, especially when they don’t understand the seriousness of the situation.

Because there are ~450 million of them in the US and parents can’t actively watch their children at all times. The reality is it can happen, even to good parents who watch their kids. It’s the same reason we should teach them about drugs or sex or anything else that a child shouldn’t be exposed to but inevitably some will. A little education can prevent a tragedy.

The fact that whole game isn’t on the CD isn’t some conspiracy to deprive you of ownership. Putting it all on CD isn’t going to defeat an always online requirement. It’s solving a technical problem. Long term game ownership is a problem solved through legislation or piracy.

To what end? The reason games came on multiple disks back in the day is because Internet speeds were slow (if they were there at all.) it was way faster to load via disk, and companies couldn’t even count on users to have a stable Internet connection anyway.

That’s not true anymore. The only reason physical disks exist at all now is more out of tradition than anything practical.

luckily the steam controller is very configurable. All the buttons can be remapped, with layers, for basically anything you could imagine. I have an OG steam controller that I use to play helldivers 2. The OG steam controller does not have a D pad at all, and D pad input is very important in that game. Normally you hold LB and then use the D pad to input stuff. So for the steam controller, I added a layer where when holding LB (and only when holding LB) the ABXY buttons become a D pad. So it’s ABXY or a D pad depending on the context and proper layers mean I don’t even have to think about it. I’m sure if the D pad on this one isn’t clicky enough, you could do something like that.

The standard layout “just works” 99% of the time, the exact same as a console controller layout. All the fancy stuff is there if you want it, but very rarely required.
