I do have a meaningful life, I just move to different cities and states often. In less than a year I’ll be on a different continent, and I’ll likely be moving after three years again

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Should I go back to college/university?
4·5 days agoI have two friends who recently graduated with electrical engineering degrees, and they can’t find work where they live. If you’re able to apply across the country and move, that may give you better results, but they are both now looking for jobs outside of their degree focus. One is actually doing IT for the university he earned his EE BS from, but there’s no opportunity for growth there because it’s an incredibly tiny school and community.
It’s been over a decade since I worked in tech, but experience was king. I’m earning a degree in biology now, because by the time I left Microsoft I knew how easy it would be to automate my job

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•good insoles/other pain management for standing job?
4·5 days agoAs a fellow flat-footed human that prefers putting weight on one foot, you might need to get over-protonation insoles. I’ve found they really force me to put weight on both feet and they do protect your ankles as well. I have been happy with PowerStep Maxx in the past, but it’s been a couple years since I purchased new ones.
I’ve also been told by a podiatrist to get Hoka shoes, but that’s outside my price range lol

11·5 days agoI always hate the entire Thanksgiving-xmas span of the year because it’s very much advertised as a family time. I’m not saying I’m miserable going through life alone, but it does make me somewhat bitter that American culture shoves what I never had in my face annually

politics @lemmy.world•Pentagon admits it doesn't 'positively ID' people before boat strikes kill them: lawmaker
44·5 days agoWhite House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly said that complaints about the strikes were an effort to “distract” from the ongoing government shutdown.
We can be angry about multiple things at once, like the Trump admin killing random people in boats, and the Trump admin disappearing thousands of immigrants, and the Trump admin pressuring congress to avoid negotiating lower Healthcare costs, and…

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•People who prepared costumes for Halloween: how much money/effort did you put in it?
4·5 days ago“forest spirit in autumn” I wrapped some silk flowers and leaves onto a headband with suede cord, glued pieces of the remainder to my face and body, and wore flowy clothes that I already own.
Cost: $5.88

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•When you were little, did your parents hold your hands? Did you feel comfortable with it? Did you feel embarassed by it?
2·6 days agoHe put his hand on my lower back after puberty, where before he’d just hold my hand. I should probably have clarified that. My dad was not an affectionate man.
This was also in the early 00s when purity balls were common, so having attended one of those I definitely feel like his hand placement was possesive

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•When you were little, did your parents hold your hands? Did you feel comfortable with it? Did you feel embarassed by it?
2·6 days agoMy mother did not. My father may have, but what I remember is when I was older and he started putting his hand on my back when we were out together. That was weird and possesive

News@lemmy.world•Bill Gates softens ‘Climate Disaster’ approach, says strategy needs to shift: Interview
533·9 days agoBill Gates knows better than most that there’s enough money in the world to try and tackle both climate change and poverty, and still leave him a billionaire.
I think the wording that really bugs me in his quote is “healthy and productive life”. If all the alarms are true we’re already fucked on climate, so he’s concerned about maintaining a labor force.
I always thought that part of the song was about domestic violence, and she’s covering up bruises. I guess it could also be covering up injection bruises

Nic cage is probably one of my favorite actors because he overacts in a way that I find very entertaining.
David Schwimmer looks exactly like a shorter, darker haired version of my brother.
And now I’m confused about whether I actually love Nic Cage or if I miss my very goofy brother lol
