Snap elections make a lot of sense after a sudden coup. You’re the only one I’ve heard try to pretend it wasn’t popular. They voted for Yanukovych overwhelmingly, but they don’t overwhelmingly want to secede after he was overthrown by people on the opposite side of the country?

Anyone who wanted to monitor secession votes did monitor it. OSCE refused on the basis that secession wasn’t legitimate, not the election itself.
A good way of determining whether Maidan was popular among the entire nation of 45+ million is regularly scheduled elections followed by a peaceful transition of power, not fascist mobs storming the capitol. Early elections were even offered by Yanukovych.
