Here’s a story. Back at my previous job I had to work with this super MAGA heavyset Israeli man we’ll nickname A. This guy had a chubber for Trump. Back when Trump was separating immigrant families at the border and sticking them in camps, A justified it by saying that “we used to do the same thing to the Japanese and no one cared about it then, so why is everyone up in arms about it now?”
This was a 50-something man from Israel. I can only imagine he’d be wholeheartedly in favor of this.
The silver lining is he got laid off after the company got fucked over by Trump
I’m fluent in Spanish and English, currently learning French. I like to describe it as Spanish with all the parts of English that make no sense. But knowing Spanish does make it a lot easier.
French will help you in Europe and Canada
Oh, I can definitely talk about this! I’m a FE engineer (10yr industry) with expertise in accessibility (aka a11y), and have directly made contributions to that space
The good news is that the modern web has very rich support for a11y. ARIA is the technology for assistive web, which is very well supported by all major browsers and can support both static and dynamic content. WCAG provides a foundational set of guidelines for accessible web, but the major players (such as Google) often have their own accessibility guidelines with stricter requirements than what WCAG provides. Visual accessibility modes such as high contrast, dark mode, and zoom are also very well supported by the major OS’s, and are nowadays configurable for your needs. The best screen reader in my opinion is VoiceOver. The worst is JAWS.
Imo most problems arise at the user and implementation levels. Smaller companies and inexperienced devs may not care about making their websites accessible, which can actually create broken DOM trees that screen readers struggle to parse. Similarly, very few users provide alt text for images (which is what screen readers see). The blame here is on the people rather than the technology.
One upcoming technology I’m actually excited for is AI assisted screen readers, which can look at a website and fill in the blanks where ARIA struggles, like parsing images and graphs. It can also parse websites that lack accessibility information. I’ve seen demos where you can even ask it questions about the content, like asking for an explanation of the trend in a graph.
Happy to answer any questions.
Yes. I understand the desire for more bodies, but the world isn’t black and white, and not everyone is able to fight.
To elaborate on my own situation, my demographics make me and my community VERY vulnerable to this administration. While the desire to help each other is there, resources are slim and everyone is struggling to sort out their own survival. A lot of the community is also disabled and reliant on others.
Now that I’m out of that, I actually have the capacity to offer support. I’m still very connected to everyone I know and love back home, but now I have the backing of a new community that is very understanding of the situation and able to offer resources. I personally can offer travel advice, a place to crash temporarily, and a safe landing to anyone who decides to follow suit. We also have established safe houses along the way. Since we made the decision to leave, my partner and I have received nothing but love and support from both communities.
Not everyone is a Fighter or a Paladin. Some are better at offering support from a distance.
Getting a work/student visa takes a lot of time so start it early. It’s generally easiest to get PR through work or study.
But it’s only one piece of the puzzle. My partner and I spent 2 months before we moved going through everything we own and deciding what to get rid of. We got rid of about half of our stuff, anything you don’t get rid of will have to go through customs, not to mention figuring out how to physically move your stuff.
Once you get to a new place, setting up is also its own logistical nightmare. You won’t have any credit established so getting an apartment or credit card might be difficult to start. You also need a bank account, which might have its own requirements.
And then there’s the social part of it. I’m lucky that my community is international and I was very quickly able to find my people, but if you don’t know anyone you’re going to be very lonely until you do. Try to make some friends before you move.
College educated skilled worker. I already left. I’m not looking back. Thanks Trump for making me realize how much the US was holding me back
I’ve never considered myself Democrat, even when I voted for them.
Prismacolor are my fav. Little pricy but worth it. They also make a school line that’s cheaper (both price and quality)
You can find them at any art supply shop. Even Michaels has em
Aubrey Plaza
Still is
Their goal is to absolutely wreck the economy so their vulture capitalist friends can swoop in and buy everything at a huge discount. Subjugating over half the population and removing “undesirables” is just a fun bonus for them. It’s fascist feudalism.
People like OP are either malicious or stupid. Or bots. Rather than try to make their guy look good, they try to make everyone else look bad.
I can’t wait for the US to shoot a missile into their own land because they don’t know the difference between kilos and miles
