It might be that this one can take non-PWA websites and make them behave like proper PWAs?

For some web apps, I want it to look and behave like an “app”, without the clutter of the extra menus that a browser has.
For others, I want it to have the protections and capabilities (ex. adblocking and extensions) that the browser has
I opened up Fdroid to check, and I found this one. I think it might be my new favourite calculator. I’ve always wanted something like speedcrunch on mobile.
I like some of these things, but I’d be ok with them being optional toggles. I remember seeing a Firefox fork with extensive customization options for the UI
Personally
- rounded corners make it easier to see what is contained in what. It gives more information than just having everything meet at corners
- gradients and blurs match the rest of my UI 😄
Without knowing much about population density, it would be nice if this graphic had a color scale instead of a solid color

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Microslop official documentation on how to ground an AI
1710·1 month agoIt almost makes me think a human worker intentionally made these slides. LLMs don’t really have the creativity to make typos, which is how I can sometimes catch LLM comments on here. Also “SharePhont” is pretty funnyUnless they used an image generator to make the slides, which would be extra stupid
edit: turns out it WAS the extra stupid
Something I haven’t seen mentioned yet is how we remember it as either BEDMAS or PEMDAS, but not PEDMAS or BEMDAS. The order of M and D are tied to whether we use the term brackets or parentheses. BEMDAS sounds very wrong to me
Isn’t that how most clinical trials work though? The post doesn’t imply that it’s solved or widely available yet
(aside from the chipped tooth photo in the thumbnail I guess)

Lemmy@lemmy.ml•Does it take just 1 subscriber to get a community "trending"?!English
0·1 month agoFrom what I remember, the Trending section was removed from the regular UI a while back. Maybe if you find that change, it might discuss what the plans are for the feature
In my opinion, it doesn’t work as intended yet and it shouldn’t be displayed

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Crowd-sourcing the best parent tech tips: Rebel Tech Alliance
6·1 month agoThis is helpful, and I hope these other platforms grow in popularity. However, my concern with kids is that they will desperately want to use the platforms that their friends are on and they will hold it against the parents (and alternative platforms) if they are forced to make do without the big tech ones.
I think addressing that will be helpful. What I would add:
- Talk about alternative front ends and teach kids about them. Its possible to access the big tech sites without the ads and tracking, and often its a much better experience. You could also explore other ways of using the platforms with limited permissions, such as by using the mobile browser instead of the app, and/or custom extensions that modify the platform (ex. uBlock origin removes ads). This way, kids can still see some of the content that their friends see (under parental supervision), and they can talk about it with them / participate in the group dynamic. They might even feel superior for knowing how to get around the problems that their friends complain about.
- Work with other parents to transition on to these other platforms. If the kid and their close friends are on the better platform, then all of the stuff above is a moot point :)
edit: by alternative front ends, I mean something like Redlib for Reddit: https://redlib.catsarch.com/r/aww/
There is a list here: https://github.com/mendel5/alternative-front-ends

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Zulip 12.0: Organized chat for distributed teams
41·1 month agoIt’s still E2E, but the sender is Zulip and the potentially hostile service provider is google/apple. E2E isn’t limited to person to person chats
It would be nice if Zulip chats were E2E, but I imagine that would be a large undertaking

Linux@lemmy.ml•How do you feel about distributing small Linux tools via GitHub and Gumroad?
3·1 month agoWhat if you distributed the tool under the normal channels, and then used gumroad (or anything similar) to sell an optional key that adds a little visual indicator or removes a nag message. I’ve seen a few other open source projects do that. Grayjay for example

World News@lemmy.ml•Bahrain king orders more citizenship revocations over ‘support’ for Iran attacks
14·1 month agoAmnesty International did put something out in both of these cases.
For the first one, the additional link goes into why that testimony was initially included in their report before the correction.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nayirah_testimony
Nayirah’s story was initially corroborated by Amnesty International, which published a report about the supposed killings[3] and testimony from Kuwaiti evacuees. Following the liberation of Kuwait, international media crews were given access to the country. A report by ABC News found that “patients, including premature babies, did die, when many of Kuwait’s nurses and doctors … fled” but Iraqi troops “almost certainly had not stolen hospital incubators and left hundreds of Kuwaiti babies to die.”[4] Later, Amnesty International USA reacted by issuing a correction, with executive director John Healey subsequently accusing the George H. W. Bush administration of “opportunistic manipulation of the international human rights movement.”
The second one is more complex, but they’re mentioned there too
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_and_gender-based_violence_in_the_October_7_attacks
Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International stated that these alleged confessions were likely extracted under torture, violate international law and basic human rights, and should be considered inadmissible as credible evidence.[61] They also called on the Israeli government to cease publishing such taped “confessions”.[61] Physicians for Human Rights Israel denounced these alleged taped confessions, citing “severe concern that the interrogations included the use of torture.”[64] The UN and reports by human rights organizations such as B’Tselem and media outlets have confirmed Israeli systematic use of torture during the Gaza war, including rape, gang-rape, sexualized torture and mutilation of detained Palestinian men, women and children by Israeli guards, including during interrogations.
My point is that, biases definitely exist and there is often selective reporting with news organizations.
I just find it weird to lump amnesty international in with all that when they seem to be one of the few that are actually calling out atrocities regardless of “sides”

World News@lemmy.ml•Bahrain king orders more citizenship revocations over ‘support’ for Iran attacks
25·2 months agoI don’t think amnesty.org’s stance on this matter would have changed in the past few years. They have been consistent in their messaging for a while now.
Interestingly, this page on criticisms highlights how they don’t shy away from calling out abuses regardless of which “side” the offending party is on

Linux@lemmy.ml•I used wget on Ubuntu to clone pages from piefed to build Zyke, a Reddit alternative
12·2 months agoWhy don’t you just implement federation normally instead of taking this roundabout way of doing things? As long as your site contributes content back, and makes it clear where content is from, other projects like piefed and lemmy would be happy to have your project join the network.
Continuing like this will likely get you IP blocked from wherever you’re mirroring content from.
Also these platforms are open source. You are allowed to copy and modify things for your own projects, as long as you follow the basic rules in the license.

For the people who are really unfamiliar with tech, I research an instance for them and make a recommendation. All they need to do is make an account as they usually do.

This might be better as a prank on a friend when you visit their place, assuming that they’d enjoy that kind of thing
