That’s the conclusion I’m coming to. Saw a lot of posts from self hosters happy they aren’t affected by this. Figured there was some reason NOT to use Cloudflare (security, etc.). But it kind of just seems like a personal preference. Cloudflare has certainly had better uptime than all my services thus far 🙂

  • The way I view it is that religion serves to quell some existential anxiety. If your daily thoughts are preoccupied with forest fires, floods, and crop blight, you would reach out to some deity you feel controls those things. The hierarchy of needs just serves to display that society has progressed (imperfectly) up that hierarchy for many people.

I’m sure someone thought of this before, as you stated. Just a stoner thought I had. But a part of me believes religion serves some primordial animal drive. A way to surrender your worry into something bigger than yourself. The ultimate goal of giving up that surrender into yourself is kind of Buddhist in a way. I hope to achieve that one day.

  • I can’t explain how much I hate simulation theory. As a thought experiment? Fine. It’s interesting to think of the universe in the context of code and logic. But as a driving philosophy of reality? Pointless.

Most proponents of simulation theory will say it’s impossible to prove the universe is a simulation, because we exist inside it. Then who cares? There obviously must exist a non-simulated universe for the mega computer we’re all running on to inhabit, so it’s a pointless step along finding the true nature if reality. It’s stoner solipsism for guys that buy nfts. It’s the “it was all a dream” ending of philosophy.

  • This actually happened earlier this year.

I was driving with my partner in a somewhat rural area. We were driving on the interstate. It was a sunny, bright winter morning. There was not all that much snow on the ground.

I notice on the side of the road, what appears to be a bear sitting in the shoulder next to the freeway, its back is turned to us, so we see its ears. It is completely black. Not black like a black bear, but black like those character locked memes.

I literally think it’s a wooden cutout. People sometimes make those for wild animals around where we were. Although as we pass this thing, it’s clear to me it is in fact a three-dimensional bear. I get a quick glimpse of its face. It is a fully, jet-black bear. The only details I can make out are small glints from its eye and the wetness of its nose. Apart from that, it looked like a void in space.

My partner and I sit in silence, and I eventually say “did you see that?” And they say “yep”. We’ve talked about this since, and my partner stands by the fact that they think it was a 2d cutout. They didn’t see the front side, which is making me think I somehow imagined it.

There are a few logical explanations, but it’s certainly the weirdest thing ive ever come across while driving.
