It’s because a lot of high profile tiktok “content creators” are going there and taking their fan base with them.

TikTok is getting banned in the US so a bunch of users are going to Xiaohongshu instead. It’s basically to spite the American government.

It remains to be seen for how long. Libs will be freaking out when they find an intersection of Chinese users on political posts like the Ukraine-Russia war in the host app they’re going to as ‘refugees.’ Their bubble will be burst badly when people disagree with them. Also, I followed the ‘reading’ interest, and there’s a lot of Mao and the Red Book there. Americans will freak out over “genocider” worship in a Chinese TikTok alternative. This app will probably separate global servers from China servers to avoid that, like TikTok, if it wants to replace TikTok

I suspect that libs aren’t gonna touch the app with a ten foot pole, but there are a lot of people in US who are becoming radicalized out of liberal mainstream. Even if the US bans the app eventually, millions of Americans will now be talking directly to people living in China. The more people talk to each other the harder it will be for the US to dehumanize or stereotype China going forward.

I just downloaded it today. I’m not American so the ban doesn’t effect me (yet, I wouldn’t be surprised if Canada follows suite) but I follow some awesome American creators and dont want to lose access to them so I followed the to Red Note.

So in an attempt to thwart imagined Chinese propaganda, USians have pushed their user base into actual Chinese platforms. If even a portion of those users come to the realization that China are not evil harry potter villains, it would be a net win.

I would say it is one of the US’s bigger own-goals, but they have had so many.

I feel like most people are smart enough to realize that the Tiktok ban is purely about censoring viewpoints that don’t fall in line with the State Department. So naturally, they want to see what else they’re not supposed to be seeing.

I’ve seen a lot of nostalgic pro-Soviet content, but in a thread on the app where someone asked how they felt about the Soviet Union, there was a lot of sentiment being expressed that indicated that they’re still pretty sore towards the Soviet Union about the Sino-Soviet split.

I even saw people suggesting that in its post-Stalin state it was better for the Soviet Union to fall.

If I’m being honest, I was pretty shocked, but I held my tongue because it doesn’t feel like it’s my place to criticize.

Edit: to be clear, my experience on the app has been overwhelmingly positive, and I love seeing the cultural exchange, because it has me very hopeful that one of the most important pieces of propaganda that the American ruling class has inculcated in its working class (China bad) will be broken.

Honestly can’t blame them for being sour about it. Khrushchev fucked up big time there. Arguably, his denunciation of Stalin is what ultimately set USSR on the course it ended up on.

The US said the quiet part out loud that the reason for the TikTok ban is because young people were seeing media of the horrific acts of the Israeli regime and its genocide on Palestine, and the US did not have the ability to control the narrative and censor content on TikTok.

I’m not acting like anything, the government is. Some of the reasons to your question include: the law is slow, TikTok is among the most popular, banning more apps would further kill the illusion that it is for OuR pRoTeCtIoN, and the US is trying to manufacture consent with a war with China by spreading anti-China propaganda and is failing to do so. The US wants to use its own tech and internet companies as a way to protect US hegemony and to not let other nations develop their own tech sovereignty. China’s Great Firewall is a protectionist policy that encourages their citizens to use and develop their own tech sovereignty, and now as they are starting to surpass the US internet companies, they are opening the doors to their platforms and giving people across the world a chance to connect on a truly global platform. Chinese citizens do not go to prison for using a VPN to access content in other countries. Europe is now considering their own Great Firewall as they realized that they are very dependent on US infrastructure, and such a firewall would help encourage their own internet industries to develop and improve their own sovereignty. US servers are also proving to be not safe for other countries to host websites given this aggressive ban and hostile behavior against foreign content which harms their hegemony.

Yes yes tik tok is harmless until its not… banning tiktok is not a freedom of speech issue but a massive security issue for the us. Also tiktok in china is not allowed to make china look bad so how long until those things make it to the US tiktok. You might not think its a good idea but I know its a great idea! China should of sold it now they deserve the ban!

Explain to me what TikTok did that was harmful. Explain to me how they used the data for malicious purposes. Also explain to me how US based companies like Meta, Google, Amazon, etc. aren’t doing the same thing and actually provide that information to the police to develop the surveillance and police state here. What’s China going to do with our data, sell it to AliExpress to make us treats?

The US officially recognizes the One China Rule, that Taiwan is a province in China, the PRC is the legitimate government of China, and that China and Taiwan should resolve their differences peacefully, which is the point of the One China Rule. Despite this, the US has funded $44 billion and created various military exchange programs for “Taiwan’s defense”, and China opposes this as obviously we don’t have a good track record with not funding and attacking foreign countries for our own gain. US wants to start a war with China because its hegemony is crumbling, and they want to keep the rich in power and not work toward a system where the workers benefit from universal healthcare, affording housing, etc.

The point of the ban is to punish a company that won’t let the US spy on its users. To move to another Chinese app is self preservation for anyone that doesn’t want the most brutal regime ever to have existed to decide what information they’re allowed to share and receive. The US is the most propagandised place on earth.

Taking a quick look at it and I really liked the interface and design, and a replacement for Instagram is sorely needed (and with all due respect, the FOSS community will never be able to compete in “photography social media”).

I hope the surge in attention motivates them to either further internationalise the current app or do something like tiktok for the foreigners (as I can’t read Chinese and would rather avoid so many English-only digital spaces).

It’s already been updated with more localisations to accommodate international users.

This is the country that mobilised to be able to build pop-up hospitals and quarantine facilities in 5 days. Now there’s a huge amount of soft power settling on their doorstep and all they need to do to reel it in is update software.

You can change the menu to english in the app. Some people use bubble translate to read chinese content, but if you’re only interacting with english language posts, you’ll mostly get english stuff in your fyp.
