On version 0.19 you can block instances so that you don’t see any posts from that instance, instead of having to block communities one by one, you still see comments from users of that instance in other posts so it isn’t completely blocking the instance.
threads.net
I’m going to be jumping ship should .world federate with Threads. I’ll find a different instance.
I know we will be able block Threads individually, but I don’t agree with federating with them on ethical principles.
I feel like it’s a failure to insulate the users from extremism and a company that deserves absolutely no trust or endorsement.
Edit: Blocking Threads on an individual basis does not prevent Threads users’ comments from being displayed on federated instances. Even if users Block Threads, they will still be exposed to the rampant hate, harassment, and extremism on the platform.
According to https://fedipact.veganism.social/?v=2, lemmy.world is federated.
Thanks for sharing. I’ll be voicing my opposition in hopes that it contributes to changing that status.
According to a post by one of the LW admins in mastodon, they won’t think about defederating unless it causes them “trouble”
Well let’s hope massive outrage by the majority of their userbase falls into the category of “trouble” then.
Except i genuinely don’t see their being massive outrage, as the user can block the instance so why would they need to defederate?
Blocking the instance does not stop Threads comments from being displayed on any federated instance.
Even if a user blocks Threads, they will still be exposed to misinformation and hateful, extremist comments/users.
Ruud is generally pro-Threads federation. We have a lot of time to change his mind though. I think he knows his stance is outnumbered something like 5 to 1.
I agree. The .world admins have been very down to Earth and reasonable thus far. I’m hoping they see reason here and do not make a decision in opposition to the majority of their userbase, which also threatens the safety of their users.
Thanks for the reminder!
Not that you’ll be able to see content posted to Threads from Lemmy anyway - you cannot post threads (in the Fediverse sense) from Threads (the platform), and microblog posts are generally not visible from Lemmy. So it might make sense as a matter of principle, but it’s not going to change anything for you.

I know it invites downvotes, but I really don’t get this.
Isn’t the entire point of federation to remove closed spaces? By blocking Threads, it basically means that the sole interaction many people will have with the fediverse is that it’s a closed ecosystem that deems itself too important to converse with you.
Even if you, like most, hate Meta, what have their users done wrong other than try to interact with your communities? If your fear is that Meta will control the fediverse, then you’ve built a closed ecosystem that’s essentially no different to Reddit. If your fear is that their community won’t like the same things you like, again, it’s a closed ecosystem.
The best thing the fediverse could do is to embrace threads. Make this place the best place on the internet, and make them want to actually join in. If they break rules, by all means, ban them, but to dismiss so many people is as closed as it gets.
Not necessary. Your instance still can just not federate with anyone.
Yes, and by not blocking Threads we let it to become a de-facto standard way to consume content on the Fediverse. If users want to avoid closed ecosystems, they can just create an acc on one of many mastodon or lemmy instances.
Blocking a single bad actor = being fully centralised. Again, create an account on the instances that don’t feed on your data and mental wellbeing.
At the most basic, Facebook (they changed to Meta as a PR thingy, mostly) thrives on being a closed broker extracting from the open world. It is not that I predict they will break things here, it is that they have consistently demonstrated that is their only way of making profits. It all starts nice and smooth. Until it isn’t.

Why? It’s like blocking Mastodon. All they can do is post comments.
So, more reasonably put, we produce value. Many of us do not want our value to contribute to facebook’s success in any way.
It would be lemmy success.
I’m of the opinion that Lemmy’s success will depend more on the quality of product the devs at lemmy.ml build, and less on our exposure to a large audience.
Strange because lemmy.world is the leading dev community.
Are we now? I know the lemmy.ml guys were the original devs, but an open source project can be devved by anyone, they just make their own branches.
