This is always such a bullshit. The products marketed at men are ALWAYS either “deep cedar - smell like your granddad!” or “SUPER ICE ARCTIC FRESH!!!”

Before I learned to ignore it completely, I was constantly stuck between two equally terrible options.

I’d love to buy a body wash that isn’t marketed to people that want to fuck sharks for the government.

Dr. Bronner’s comes in normal scents and works really well as long as you don’t mind it being covered with the ramblings of a madman.

My favorite is peppermint because it feels tingly.

The gender product grift is laughable. And yet people eat it up. I couldn’t believe the first time I saw these at almost 2x markup of regular unscented baby wipes:

I don’t know what “Ocean Charge” is supposed to smell like but it was cheap.

I just use cheap products and if they don’t pass my “do they work” test I dont ever buy that one again. My body wash test is extremely simple. If I wash my armpits and I can still feel antiperspirant still there after, the body wash fails and I’ll never buy it again.

If it washes it all out… It passes.

Edit: That said some products by the same company fail while others don’t. I found a pomegranate one time that worked extremely well and I swore I was going to stick with that moving forward… It apparently was limited time couldn’t find it again and the next product I bought from the same brand failed my test… So I was sad.

Right? I’m a fairly big hairy bikery punkerish type. I am told I look intimidating.

But if you get up close what you’re going to smell is blueberries and vanilla!

I got a floral smelling perfume that was labelled “for men”. Really liked it. But got told a bunch of times “someone’s wearing a lovely women’s perfume”. Maybe I just want to smell like flowers too goddamnit.

I just straight up started wearing women’s perfume. I really like sweet and powdery smells, as well as vanilla notes. You don’t really get stuff like that ‘for men’, but their stupid labels can’t stop me.

…just make your own at that point and save money? You should not be suffering spending extra on unscented stuff. That’s like the easy ass default. You can buy unscented soap in bulk for cheap as hell.

And haven’t tried this, but: https://cadryskitchen.com/diy-coconut-oil-deodorant/

Like baking soda, cornstarch, and coconut oil might be all you need for an unscented deodorant

sadly i am a stinky/sweaty lady and require antiperspirant, not just deodorant. which I did actually attempt to make myself once. i bought aluminum chlorohydrate powder and then proceeded to not make the time/effort to make an antiperspirant gel/spray out of it for about 5 years before giving up, admitting to myself it was an abandoned project, and tossing it along with components for several other abandoned projects in a pre-move cleanup 😑

fortunately I’m actually good on soap for now between Kirk’s Coco Castille unscented and my hipster friend’s homemade unscented olive oil soap :]

shampoo and conditioner have been difficult. I like the CeraVe ones I currently use but have to decide if I’m satisfied with their performance enough to justify the price. 😬 though if I do decide that I’ll likely get them online for cheaper next time I run out

it is a big dumb scam that unscented things usually cost way more than scented.

Check the organic/natural isle of your grocery store and look for the Potassium Alum based deodorant. They look like a block of crystal. They’re natural and non-aluminum. They also come in unscented variants. Best of all, they’re cheap.

I have one, they’re super great astringents for stopping bleeding of small cuts :D sadly they’re not very effective on my level of sweat/stink 😭 though they are better than nothing so I use mine as a backup when I’ve run out of aluminum chlorohydtate antiperspirant. They are indeed cheap if you know where to look, and I’ve never had one run out (I just drop them and they break 😂)

of note, potassium alum / any alum mineral does actually contain aluminum ions by definition. they are known to be non-irritating to some people who have a reaction to more mainstream antiperspirant ingredients (e.g. aluminum chlorohydrate, aluminum chloride) hence their popularity as an alternative

I just look for solid gel over liquids or pastes and deodorant over antiperspirant, smell a few and go with what smells least offensive. Couldn’t tell you what any of them are called because even when they are supposed to smell like an actual smell they rarely actually smell like that thing, really.

Almost every antiperspirant has an aluminum compound in it that make me red, swollen, and itchy. I can only use alum free deodorant, as antipersepeants genuinely cause me pain after a few days of use. The weird thing is I don’t even have sensitive skin, no allergies, and I regularly get all manner of metal shavings and various carcinogenic chemicals on me (gas, diesel, parts cleaner, ATF, gear oil I could go on) and don’t have any issues with eczema or anything but the antiperspirant sticks will fuck my week up. Ymmv but if u find a speed stick makes u itchy or uncomfortable see if it has alum, and if it does switch to without.

Generally speaking with 24h deodorant it neutralizes my odor very well, or so say people I’ve asked. Antiperspirant stops my sweat but doesn’t neutralizes odor nearly as well in my experience. I definitely don’t want something that will stop my body from perspiring as it’s not an issue for me because I really don’t perspire much, but I definitely want a dedicated odor neutralizer.

Antiperspirant tends to be the stuff that contains concerning heavy metals. You’re supposed to be able to sweat, it’s just the stinky part that sucks haha.

Oh I still sweat. So don’t worry about that. Using deodorant I can still smell like a boar pen within an hour after use. Even if I’m just sitting at a desk with my eyes closed.

You want me to use all the heavy metal antiperspirant I got.

Anti-perspirants also ruin clothes. I guess the aluminum causes that? Either way it’s annoying to use. Killing the sweat bacteria with booze instead and having a nice fragrance on top of it works fine.
