Tesla will stop making the Cybertruck next year, according to CEO Elon Musk, who said on X that the company will use the factory space to build more two-seater Cybercab robotaxis.

The decision to wind down the futuristic, steel-clad EV comes after just a few short years of underwhelming sales. When Musk handed over the first few Cybertrucks in late 2023, he predicted Tesla would sell around 250,000 per year. It was supposed to be such a cornerstone of Tesla’s future that, before construction began, the company talked about its Texas factory as the “Cybertruck factory.” But Tesla has instead sold just tens of thousands — total — over the last three years.

I see them all over the place. A day doesn’t go buy that I don’t see a few. They had sales.

I suspect the real problem are the sales patterns, which are probably very bad. Because of Musk’s increasingly poor reputation, they’ve probably completely stopped selling new ones, and nobody wants used ones, so why build more dead inventory?

His terrible behavior has destroyed his car company, which is on a steady, inexorable slide toward bankruptcy. Trump will keep Tesla alive through the 2028 election, for access to his money, but once Trump is out of office, Tesla will go off the cliff.

You think those cars will live long enough to become Oldtimers in the future?

Teslas are generally speaking good cars but the Cybertruck was fucking dumb. It’s like the Simpsons episode where Homer designs a car. I wouldn’t be surprised if it is the first thing Musk has actually designed himself.

Markets are working, it seems. Just a bit slowly.

Tesla initial product quality is in the shitter and has been for years. I don’t know anyone who owns a new Tesla who didn’t have to send it for repairs in their first year of ownership to correct production defects, some of them multiple times. From accounts I’ve read, the Cybertruck is worse than other Tesla models.

Once sorted, they seem OK, except for all the design quirks that compromise safety and usability. And I have no idea about their long-term durability.

As a side note, I know someone who owns a Roadster built in the pre-Musk Tesla era. That thing is extraordinarily well-built and has never given the owner trouble, except for speeding tickets. Ownership by Musk has been a value destroyer for Tesla.

True, I had to do that too. Warranty repairs though so not that bad.

And I have no idea about their long-term durability.

I think I’m going to find out, because nobody probably wants to buy this shit lol. In my local country dealership portal, the oldest Teslas being sold are 2016 Model S, and the asking price is about 24keuros. Odometer at 150-250 000 kilometers.

Important to mention too, is that they frequently fail vehicle inspections. Here in Denmark the fail rates at the first inspection after 4 years are: Tesla Model Y - 45%, Tesla Model 3 - 34%, and for comparision, VW ID.4 - 2%.

They often fail due to excessive play in suspension components and control arm. Wild that a brand new car becomes a safety hazard due to shitty components that fast.

I can’t wait for my kids to finally stop pointing them out and saying, “Dad, there’s that car you hate.”

I’m a school bus driver. The only cars that elementary school kids get excited about are the ones that piss me off: cybertrucks, teslas in general, corvettes, lamborghinis. No other cars exist for kids.

I like loudly pointing them out to my wife with, “Hey babe, look. It’s one of those Nazi cars!”

It’s really fun when there are other people around, especially the owner.

Not really. There’s a massive stockpile of them that they’re trying to flog to the US govt. That might have become much more difficult since last week.

        Only slightly.

For the most part, choosing which vehicles a federal agency will buy is entirely an Executive Branch thing.

The Tesla bubble has popped. Every earnings call will be worse than the last, and will be followed by a stock slide. There is no saving it, no rehabbing it’s image. Trump may keep it alive with bailouts, but Tesla will be bankrupt the moment Trump is out of office.
