yeah i have an external ssd that uses that weird clamshell connector, you can actually just plug in a regular micro B and it works with usb 2.0 speeds

lightning was basically a better version of the micro-b connector, it debuted with the iPhone 5 in 2012, it had a few advantages over micro-B including a reversible connector. back when it came out apple users complained because all the accessories used the old 30-pin connector so they weren’t compatible, so apple pledged to not change the iPhone connector again for a long time, iirc 10 years? i think that’s why iPhones were still using lightning until 2023 despite having usb C on the macbook since 2016

you need a pixel for the time being, but that’ll be changing soon. i got a second hand pixel that was two versions older than the latest to mitigate that as much as possible

yeah, the reason i compared google and apple is because it’s like the only two options available, as far as i know there aren’t any linux phones which can actually work as phones, best we can do is degoogled android and very few people use it

i dont think we are talking about like, phone performance so much as the level of evil associated with the corporation provided by the platform, i use grapheneOS which is degoogled android because google is super evil, and apple is evil too, but they’re a minor evil by comparison to google
