that book about the alt-right, “kill all normies” was published around 2016 or 2017 iirc, so i assume they’ve been using that word p heavily for at least around a decade.
That word long predates the alt right, it’s used by many niche communities to refer to people who are not in that niche community (“civilians” is also used for this).
I associate “NPC” with psychopathic alt right EA types.
