I like the Japanese style ones where the entire bathroom is the shower. The floor is meant to be wet with the benefit of just being able to spray the entire bathroom down when it needs cleaning.

Yeah, I don’t get this new trend of doorless showers. One of the many modern interior designs I think are bad/ugly. What’s the deal with modern minimalism? Shit is ugly.
Also, this kind of design is gonna make for cold ass showers in the winter unless you pump your heat all day and night.
Doorless showers are great for the elderly, disabled, orgies, you name it- WHEN DONE RIGHT. This is far from correct. The shower spray should be spraying away from the entry, not right fucking at it. It’s puzzling because it looks like the control valve is on the near side so they routed the head all the way around to be in the wrong place? Even then, this is kind of a small space for a doorless. Also, one of those stupid corner shelves and a safety handle way the fuck in the corner. Buy a shower rod and floor length curtain to hang inside the glass wall. It’ll be real fancy.

Meh. They can work if you have the space for them. This one is way to small. But I’ve seen really nice ones executed. You just need more space than most people have for the shower to occupy.
Come to Korea! Many bathrooms are just closets with a toilet and a sink with a shower head attached and you just shower in the bathroom and soak anything that’s in there.
Not only that, the draft coming in makes you freezing cold the entire time, forcing you to huddle under the water for most of your shower, thus wasting it and washing away the soap you’re trying to lather in.
A hotel I stayed at once had this exact same shower and I can confirm that water did in fact get everywhere. I wouldn’t be surprised if the building collapsed after a few years due to water damage rotting/eroding away the support beams under the floor.
When I used to install custom shower enclosures, I would quietly cringe every time someone wanted one of these awful things. What I would usually compromise with the customer on is, size the panel so that the walk-through opening was sized correctly to accept a stock door, if they want to add one later. I’d say more than half of clients would add the door less than a year later.
yep. had to buy my own door for mine as the installers didnt even include a curtain with their package. tried one before realizing a door is a must
Sorry, are you talking about showers with broken doors, or showers without a door at all?
If the latter, how TF is that supposed to even work? Are we talking like a communal shower, where the door is too far away from the shower for water to splash out?

The latter. I’ve seen them at some hotels. They’re god awful. The water splashing out isn’t even the worst part. The shower doesn’t get all hot and steamy because it has to get the entire bathroom hot. I travel for work and switched the hotel I was going to just because it had these types of showers.

Was the contractor sick? Did they get kidnapped by ICE and moved to one of their gulags? Is there a glass shortage in your area? Are you really cheap, and just didn’t want to pay for the full thing? Was Dinah Lance showering in there, and the water suddenly turned cold because someone flushed the toilet, and she screamed, shattering the glass? Did someone steal it because they needed to melt it down and reconfigure it for a place to store one of their victim’s freshly-lopped heads?

People want doorless showers but most of them don’t have the space in their bathroom that would be required to build one that works properly.
Some of them can’t accept that fact and try to build one that relies entirely on the delusion that water respects boundaries.
That’s 100% a hotel, though.
Hotels love installing these things. They’re cheaper than two large shower doors, they make the room look bigger, and guests think it looks modern.
That said, you’re kind of supposed to pair this with a rain shower head in the ceiling to reduce splash. This looks like a remodeled hotel that didn’t want to move the plumbing. They just did a cheap refresh to make people feel like they were staying in a modern room.
I stayed at a hotel in Vegas (of course) that had no doors on theirs. Just an open, locker-room-style shower. And the floor was barely level enough to not flood the bathroom if the shower head was pointed directly at the corner. It was not pointing the right way when I turned it on.
I’ve never once chosen one hotel over another because I saw pictures and said “Oh look, this one has a doorless shower! It looks so modern and spacious.”
They’re terrible. Everything you said is true, but I’ll add that unless you crank up the heat in the room, they’re miserable on cold days. The enclosed showers trap the steam and warmth from the how water in with you, but with no door it’s just cold.
Thought that heat lamps might get rid of the chill factor?
I have 3+ meter ceilings in all rooms including the bathroom, and the heat lamps are a godsend in winter.
I’m looking to renovate the bathroom over the coming years and thought that an open space shower might be a great addition but maybe we will reconsider.
I do like the Japanese prefab wet bathroom units, but not sure if they are available here, nor if the other half would approve.
Well, they do, but they’re giant energy hogs. Just have a door on the shower and that stuff isn’t needed.

Hm. My bathroom is always 23°C or warmer, no matter the weather. When is colder outside, my heat pump delivers more warm water to the heating circuits. Does heating in the US work differently?

Most of the heat in the US is electric or gas. In areas where the temps get freezing and below outside, people don’t tend to run it to get the temps into the mid 20s like that.
Does that really make a difference on the bill, are the houses so badly insulated? I always thought that style of building with wooden walls and insulation foam should make heating extremely cheap.
Insulation varies, but even a well insulated house is going to get cold if it’s freezing outside, and it takes energy to get them up to a toasty temp.

I do. But a proper one. All tiled. No glass that is a PITA to keep clean. No curtain that gets disgusting. Just step in, shower, step out.
But that stuff is out of reach to most people, including myself. And to be brutally honest, it is pure excess. But some people are still trying to imitate that with those crappy compact ones but it just ends up being stupid and worse than a normal shower.
That’s cool but I would feel way too vulnerable in that thing. I need a door within sight so I can be prepared in case a zombie appears or something.

I do and I have one. The downstairs shower next to the sauna is just an entire tiled room so I don’t feel like I’m in a cramped space. I always use that one, even in the winter when it’s basically freezing down there, because I hate the cramped booth upstairs, I have very broad shoulders and can always feel like I’m going to hit the walls.
The one in the OP is the worst of both worlds though. Still cramped, but doesn’t keep water in like a regular shower booth… and it’s installed in a bathroom without a proper tiled floor…
The opening is too wide, the shower head should be a rainfall shower, not the Commando 450.
Wouldn’t a handheld showerhead be even better? That way, you could aim the showerhead directly away from the opening, somewhat reducing the incidence of splashing.
I know from experience that it’s not sufficient, but I’m certain it minimizes the damage, and honestly I consider handheld showerheads to be superior regardless
Nah. Ours is a rainfall shower but the floor still gets wet.
I think you’re dead-on. I had a 5’ wide doorless shower, 3’ of glass, and a rainfall showerhead and it was fine. Minimal leakage
Mine was fine till the kids grew up and wanted showers not baths. Water everywhere. Had to replace it with a sliding door

That just looks like an unfinished shower, or a sliding door set with a missing half. Maybe you could get a little shower curtain to hang up across the hole
