Two guys standing at the pump at a Shell gas station. The guy at pump 2 holds up the gas pump nozzle to his ear and tells the guy at pump 1 “Apparently, if you hold a Shell pump to your ear you can hear the shareholders laughing at you”.

I wouldn’t even if I was joking.
If you chose to live 100 miles away from where you work, you can’t really complain when you have a long commute.
It’s not so easy to sell a house pick up and move, it’s the type of answer you get from someone with enough to be mobile which excludes more than 90% of the country.
Not to mention that living close to where the jobs are can be prohibitively expensive.
I’ll go ahead and jump in before “you should have chosen a different line of work in a different part of the world where the problems you weren’t expecting don’t exist to the same extent yet.”
This is kind of a false dichotomy. It’s not like your only options are living downtown 2 mins walk from your office or living over 100 miles from your office.
100 miles is like working in Manhattan and living in Catskill. Which actually lines up pretty well with what OP said, Google says thats 3 hours by public transit and 12 hours by bike… But it’s also 2 hours 20 mins by car…
FWIW, I agree it’s not a binary, all or nothing situation. That said, circumstances change constantly (e.g., management no longer allowing remote work, divorce with joint custody of kids, or infinite other possibilities) that make a previously workable situation no longer work. I think the parent poster is correct, and the circumstances enabling relocation (including, but not limited to money) cannot be presumed.
Why would you buy a house 100 miles away from your job in the first place? / Why would you get a job 100 miles away from where you live?
And if you did do that, then just don’t complain your commute is long? Like I’m not saying you’re not allowed to do that or it makes you a bad person or some shit, just don’t complain about how long your commute is.
You buy a house where you work, you don’t work there anymore and it’s not a small cost to move.
Again, why get a new job 100 miles away in that case?
And if you have a reason to do so. Just don’t complain your commute takes you 3 hours.
Because not every career path has parody at every street corner. No, still complain. The issue is public transit, long commutes are extremely common even in European nations with a bit more mobility the difference is in most European countries you have fast affordable transportation. Japan 100mi is a bullet trip that’s much less than an hour, same with most of Europe. 10mi on my local public transit is $5 and over an hour.
