This should be overlapped with Pornhub’s viewing data per state for a good laugh.
trans, and gayporn consumption. is likely higher in the sexually repressed states.
I really find futa the most annoying genre of drawn / 3d porn and I’m so excited for being less than straight to gain acceptance across more male populations because I know that’ll probably cut it in more than half.
Interesting but not beautiful. No labels for the state names, even Americans don’t know the geography that well. The smaller states need numbers with lines. Maryland and D.C. overlap and Delaware has no number.

You should take it up with the original poster not the repost bot.
Sounds like the bot needs to die.
Ohhh nooo, someone’s helping to populate the fediverse with more content so that it’s not exclusively found on reddit! The humanity!
I’m ashamed that WA isn’t higher. I don’t know why we put up with the half of the state east of the mountains, they’re just our cross to bear.
We all have our deplorable area. For California, it’s the central valley and a lot of the northern part of the state.
As soon as I saw this, I thought that we need to see this broken down by sides of the state and see how evenly different regions were included, especially for Washington and Oregon.
For cultural stats like this Oregon and Washington should be split vertically instead of horizontally, would give a much more accurate indication of the region
Not even, it’s like five counties in each state with 70% of the total population.
Former Oregonian here. Same about eastern Oregon.
Well aware. There are towns out there that gave me severe bad vibes. I was rolling through Chemult one time while camping. No place has ever given me such an urgent desire to quickly leave.
I remember passing Chemult on my many train rides down to California. Beautiful landscapes. Sucks that it’s full of horrible humans, though.
It feels like the start of a Hitchcock film
If it wasn’t for Spokane you could give the whole eastern half to Idaho. (Except don’t, don’t give them more electors!)
No, it’d be great. Lump all those places into one state and let them see how they like having their individual voting power be diluted by the electoral college. Let all the places with cities who actually make the nation’s money take a turn at the wheel.
Why should we turn 100% of our farmland into Republican states?
It’s a little weird to suppose I was serious, don’t you think?
For the most liberal state in the Union, “Commiefornia” has an awful lot of conservatives and bigots
My university campus alone has had two hate crimes in the last year, one against a Muslim student and one against a gay student
I mean if you’re looking for the 25-30% they still think Trump is doing a good job and they approve, that’s it
California is so goddamn huge that it can’t help but represent a wider range of demographics. I’d be interested to know how it compares against the overall national rate of acceptance.
Edit: If you average all of the numbers on the map together, the national average is 67%. Whether or not that’s a responsible way to work with this data… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Californian here. My LGBTQ+ friends have all sorts of bigot stories. Bigots are like worms/maggots. You can find them anywhere.
Some of the big cities have mostly the progressives, but once out into the countryside or further away and into certain suburbs there are angry red areas.
Also, a very convenient map of the best and worst US states.
Even in the best state 13% said no. More than 1 in 10. The fucking whole country is filled with disgusting human beings. I wonder what they’d say to the obvious follow up question of “Okay, what do you think should be done with homosexual people?”
It’s most countries. https://www.equaldex.com/equality-index
Idk, Texas is pretty bad
Idk, New Jersey or Delaware or whatever tiny “states” are in that northeast cluster are going to have to do a lot more than be cool with gay stuff for me to ever visit lol. WA and CA are gay as hell, despite the slightly lower score I feel like either one would be a way better place to bring your boyfriend
Where exactly is you’re impression of NJ coming from? NJ is dense, but diverse and pocketed, but even the conservative pockets wont say anything to your face.
Delaware is just office space, suburbs, and tax evasion so I don’t know why anyone would go anyway.
Just osmosis I guess, never been near either one. I’m kinda bored with the regional rivalry thing, if you’re interested I replied elsewhere in this same thread
New Jersey gets a lot of undeserved hate because it’s part of NYC popular culture to shit on them. And as a result, that bleeds in to national popular media.
New Jersey is nicer, the people are friendlier, the streets aren’t lined with fucking filth and the buildings aren’t falling apart the way they are in NYC. It’s a bit cheaper to boot.
By far, my time in Newark was more pleasant than my time in NYC. At this point I wouldn’t go back to NYC unless something pretty compelling made it worth dealing with the bullshit New York puts you through.

It’s weird to me when people shit on NJ despite never going there. It’s the same energy as when people repeat stupid jokes from reddit to feel like they’re part of the group. Makes my skin crawl a little.
Also weird, but understandable I guess, is when people’s only experience with NJ is like the airport, or the Secaucus train station, and they assume the whole state is like that. Like thinking all of Nevada is Vegas’ strip. It’s not representative.
NJ is fine. I mean, I detest the suburbs so large chunks of it are not for me.
At this point I wouldn’t go back to NYC unless something pretty compelling made it worth dealing with the bullshit New York puts you through.
NYC does have a lot of stuff happening. Pretty much any band on tour will play NYC, for one thing.
They’ll also play in Chicago, which is a far better experience all around.
Maybe! I’ve been a few times and it was fine, but you don’t really get a sense of a place staying a weekend.
I think Chicago you can get by without owning a car? That’s one of my top priorities
You can!*
Public transit in Chicago is some of the better public transit I’ve used. I’ve stayed for weeks on end without ever needing a car. Though taxis/Uber sometimes does a little of the heavy lifting there.
*Very much dependent on where in Chicago you live/stay and where you want to go. Downtown is fantastic, Southside and most of the suburbs are meh. You might need a car out there.
From this distance they almost blur into the same place. NYC would be ground zero for like, rats and pizza and graffiti and everything being really expensive and NJ kinda sounds like more of the same but less intense and with the Sopranos and beach boardwalks. Can you tell I’ve never been anywhere near either one? :p
Counterpoint: the people I deal with in person from Jersey are on average way more annoying than the surrounding states.
You should visit! Went to Rhode Island, had a blast!
Just be careful not to walk for more than a few minutes in one direction or you’ll end up in another state.
I’m glad :) wouldn’t say no if the opportunity presented itself, but think I’m more a national parks than quaint b&b type. Also it’s really far!
My cousins live in Delaware and it is kinda nice. They have some nice home owner incentives that I get really jealous of. When I got my house in NY they were like, “you can get some new windows installed for free” and I’m like ???. They also got their basement finished for less than 20k (with a new bathroom). Renovating my bathroom alone was like 12k. That being said, I didn’t explore Delaware itself much, so idk what is around there.
I am happy for your cousins and didn’t really mean to dunk on Delaware! It’s a wide world and there are a lot of ways to live in it. My only perceptions are that it’s expensive, densely populated, kinda boring, and a popular place to register corporations for tax reasons. Without getting too specific I’ll say I’m in the “western states” and 20k is worth more than most houses anyone’ll let me into. More a “mobile home behind on lot rent” kind of guy. Lot of great hiking, camping, hunting, etc though. Possibly a dumb question but can you collect firewood where you’re at?
You can dunk on Delaware haha, I was just giving the minor impression that I have of that state. I’m just mostly jealous of their incentives, I would not know how it actually is living there.
I live in upstate NY, got plenty of firewood here from what I know.
I always thought it was interesting how the one thing MAGA hasn’t been frothing at the mouth to reverse is gay marriage, it’s really crazy how fast the opinion changed once it became legal nationwide and the sky didn’t fall.
Oh, they’re frothing about it. It’s just that they know they’ll get shouted down about it. So they plan to go after trans people first.
Conservatives (fascists) always need a minority to persecute because their ideology is based on hate. Gay people ended up getting enough support across the board, after decades of effort, that conservatives (fascists) had to swap to targeting trans individuals instead to keep feeding the hate machine.
Wish I was exagerrating but that’s literally what happened. Same thing happened with black people. They ended up getting enough support, after a Herculian effort, that conservatives swapped to targeting gay people.
Conservatives (fascists) are truly awful human beings.
They’ll get to them after they finish with the trans people.
I grew up with Christian nationalists, and I can assure you, MAGA always has their eye on gay marriage.
They just know they don’t have the power at the moment, as their voter base has significantly eroded and some of the more normie republicans in the federal government can see that the Trump regime isn’t quite as inevitable as they thought it was almost two years ago.
Marriage is at its core property law that promotes social stability and commitment to a status quo. If you’re gay but willing to pay a mortgage, raise a kid, and keep number going up they’re happy to have you for the moment. I don’t see it as a prize to be won but as a culture war touchpoint that has served its purpose and an option for those with previously subversive lifestyles to give up/buy in.
It’s not as appealing or accessible of an option as it once was, and I don’t think they can afford to be as picky as they might like. If we get to a point where the Department of Family needs your home for a couple with more traditional values it’ll be another story, but I imagine religion, race, and political affiliation (in roughly that order) will be greater risk factors than sexuality. As is, getting married at all is a clear enough signal of alignment to be left alone
Those are some pretty low numbers
Seriously! I thought this was an old jpg getting recycled until I zoomed in on the bottom 😬
Zooming in on the bottom is also how to be gay 🌈
You either zoom in on the bottom or become it
Oh! Oh! Now corelate the data against average household income!

A map for you sir/madam/all else
Well gawrsh, looks like it pays to be cool with the gays!
Or that comfort makes you tolerant. This would explain Florida’s position of being relatively gay for how poor it is: mostly beach, pretty chill. Less need for a scapegoat I guess ;)
Well, there’s also a lot of pockets of low low income earners that throw off the average in a few states. Nevada has a ton of people that live in the middle of the desert on nothing but meth and fentanyl, but Vegas and Reno are obviously super tolerant. Florida would be the similar, I imagine.
But yeah, so comfort might be a real factor here.
I used slightly more recent median household income for a correlation of 71%
What?! Wisconsin, the “Alabama of the north”, has the same acceptance rate as Cali? I did not expect that.
I thought Cali would be higher given their reputation, but I’m also not that surprised.
There’s a lot of latinos in CA and they’re pretty religious.
Source: Some of my best friends are latino and aren’t religious but their families are super religious. Which makes things real difficult for my gay latino friend.
There are a LOT of rednecks here out in the boonies. In the big cities the rate is higher, as with most places.
I’m visibly queer & live in the SF Bay Area, and while I feel relatively safe, I’ve also encountered far more homophobia/lesbophobia/transphobia than I would have expected
Don’t care who they be fuckin, can they pound a beer and can they defend the honor of Cheesus is all that matters man
amen brother cheers from iraq
First, the term is “Wississippi”. Second, I totally agree. I was shocked to see how well we did.
I think, like usual, Madison and Milwaukee carry the load here.
I always said that’d be Indiana lol.
I gotta visit Vermont. Gayer than California and hella good cheese? Let’s go!
Now overlay the map of states where the most gay porn is consumed. All the anti gay states will be the top consumers.
Alaska. Nice.
I wonder how the results changed if the question was put a different way. Even I struggle to answer this a bit. I don’t think society should “accept” my homosexuality. There’s plenty things I don’t “accept” either but I just stay out of it then. No need to like it - just don’t be a jerk and let me live my life. I don’t need your validation.
I mean good for you, but as a fellow homosexual, I demand acceptance.
Tolerance is a pathetically low bar. We deserve equality and respect.
Respect is not deserved but earned on a individual basis for demonstrating good character. It has nothing to do with your sexuality.
Sometimes people use “respect” to mean “treating someone like a person” and sometimes they use “respect” to mean “treating someone like an authority”
and sometimes people who are used to being treated like an authority say “if you won’t respect me I won’t respect you” and they mean “if you won’t treat me like an authority I won’t treat you like a person”
and they think they’re being fair but they aren’t, and it’s not okay.
https://kottke.org/18/05/the-respect-of-personhood-vs-the-respect-of-authority
just don’t be a jerk and let me live my life
That’s literally acceptance…
Wouldn’t the opposite of acceptance imply eradication?
Perhaps to some but one does not automatically follow from the other. There are additional steps to be taken in between to get from not-liking to wanting it destroyed.
In my experience most people don’t have an issue with gays existing. The issue is with forcibly shoving that acceptance down their throats.
The issue is with forcibly shoving that acceptance down their throats.
Eww, you sound like a maga
Congratulations ! You’ve been brainwashed.
I’m curious, what about that persons response makes you feel they’re brainwashed?
The fact that they find normal that their homosexuality isn’t accepted.
So… Your brain is dirty?
It sounds more like they’re conflating “acceptance” with “tolerance”, which isn’t the same thing.
This why Kansas is better than Arkansas
It is still like the 1980’s around here in Arkansas. I’m not gay but when I was in my early twenties(Mid 90’s) I really enjoyed going to the showings of the Rocky Horror Picture show in Little Rock. One night we had some no necks try to assault the crowd lined up at the screening. The four dipshits jump out expecting the crowd to run. We had three guys there They were cut like the guy in the movie and only wearing gold short shorts. Those assholes quickly found out the the horror in rocky horror would kick your ass. Roll forward to the late 2010’s. Nearly the same thing occurred at some drag show in Little Rock that my daughter was attending. She didn’t see it all but I read about it a few days later.
The point is though nothing has changed in Arkansas. Too many closeted guys or guys who got a boner from chick with a dick who get excited when people make choices they are too scared to make turn to violence to cloak their true sexuality.
“dost thou protest too much” is still a real thing and a real handy way to spot
no necks
At first I thought you meant people dressed up as this guy:

I was pretty disappointed to see Arkansas as the worst… Usually we can rely on Mississippi or Alabama to keep us from last place on anything : (
Fewer letters in the name.
Fuck Arkansas, other than Eureka Springs
My partner has family in Arkansas and I’ve seen more of it than I’d like, but Eureka Springs was delightful. Honestly never ran into anyone else who knows about it though!
It’s a wonderful reprieve if you’re driving through the area!
